Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
The Roto Grip Gremlin is scary good — and the numbers prove it. With 1,085 units sold shortly after launch, this ball has become an immediate hit. The Rondure asymmetric core boasts a .058 differential, making it the strongest asymmetric core in Roto Grip’s current lineup. Paired with the V-R1 Pearl Reactive coverstock and Storm Power Edge finish, the Gremlin creates one of the most explosive pearl asymmetric motions available.
The combination of pearl coverstock on an aggressive asymmetric core creates a unique motion: clean through the front with a violent, angular backend reaction. On transition — when the fronts are burned up and the backends are still holding — the Gremlin shines. It pushes through the dried-up heads and still has enough energy to make an aggressive move at the breakpoint.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Gremlin is built for power players and tournament bowlers who need an angular weapon for transition. If you throw it with speed and revs, the Rondure core will reward you with massive entry angle and devastating pin action. Anthony Simonsen’s endorsement speaks volumes — this is a ball designed for bowlers who want to create separation on the backend when conditions break down.
The Pros
- • Rondure asymmetric core (.058 diff) is Roto Grip's strongest
- • 1,085 units sold — immediate hit
- • Pearl on asym creates explosive backend on transition
- • Power Edge finish for versatile OOB reaction
The Cons
- • Can be too angular on lighter conditions
- • Pearl coverstock less controllable on fresh heavy oil

The Gremlin’s modified core simply is amazing. I was able to try this ball on the fresh and the burn and it gave me a great look. The ball on the fresh, I was able to play a little further right around 7-8 board at the arrows. The ball definitely started picking up a touch sooner than I expected but the lanes this summer have been playing with a bit more friction than last summer. Now I was able to jump back on the same lanes at the end of the night after the league and I was blown away with the versatility of this ball. My first handful of shots I was rolling the ball around 15 at the arrows out to about 5 and the ball just ripped off the spot and continued through the pins. Moving a little more left I tried to throw around 20 at the arrows to keep it a little tighter and a handful of shots I missed in gave me some good mix strikes. But the ones that seemed to get to the 12-14 board area on the lane came back high flush.
This ball is a house shot killer, shooting 885 in 9 pin no tap league and 268 making a ball review video. This ball always finds the pocket
Have only used this for a handful of games so far and absolutely love it already.

The Gremlin has hatched and is ready to strike! It features the brand new V-R1 (Versatile-Response 1st Edition) pearl cover and the Rondure MaxD core. The V-R1 cover was created to push through the fronts and provide a consistent reaction to friction on a wide variety of patterns and oil types. The Rondure MaxD core, first seen in the Rubicon series, has been pushed to the limit to generate the longest and most continuous downlane reaction in the HP3 line. The Gremlin gave me a great look sliding on 30, looking 17 at the arrows with my breakpoint around 7-8. I was able to play multiple angles by changing my speed and hand position, but the Gremlin thrived the further left I moved. It also did an excellent job blending out the wet/dry on the high friction house pattern. When compared to the Rockstar, it was several feet cleaner and much sharper off the end of the pattern. I’ve had great success with HP3 balls from Roto Grip in the past and get a UC2 vibe from the Gremlin. If you are in the market for a pearl asymmetric ball that will compliment your strong solid/hybrid asymmetric balls, the Gremlin will be a must in your bag. This ball is super clean in the oil, and when it finds the slightest bit of friction it takes off. It's really hard off the spot and when it hits it keeps driving through the pins. definitely not a ball for a high friction house, but if your center uses that cheap prodigy oil that pushes down lane the gremlin is definitely a ball for the bag
The Roto Grip Gremlin is an amazing bowling ball. Highly recommend!!!

The Gremlin is the newest ball in the Roto line and features the V-R1 Pearl Reactive cover, Rondure MaxD Core, and comes with power edge finish. This ball is the first one in a while that does not feature AI technology. When throwing the Gremlin, it reminds me a lot of the UC2, both strength and shape. It is one of those balls that you can get left and throw right without having to worry about it not getting back. This ball has that good old hockey stick shape. This is a bigger asym Typhoon and would be a step down from the attention star and the equinox. For me, this is not going to be a fresh oil ball but when they burn up and you need to wheel the lane. This ball is going to be versatile for many styles and another great release from Roto Grip! Ball review link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBC-2_sjAgs&t=35s Tobias Myers #RotoGrip #SquadRG
Pattern: 41ft house shot Layout: 70 x 4 1/2 x 40 Finish: Box (Power Edge) The Roto Grip Gremlin features the Rondure MAXD core which has been modified to its highest RG and differential possible. Complimented with a nano free coverstock in the V-R1, this asymmetrical pearl gives the feel of the old school symmetrical with a weight hole without actually identifying as such. This ball reminds me a lot of the Rubicon UC-2 in its motion, just with a stronger backend due to the updated finishing product, Power Edge. When I used the ball in the practice time before league, it would go a little too long on the fresh, but I decided to take it out for game 3. On the burn, this ball is a BEAST. 300 game first game out of the box. Highly recommend this piece if you are looking for a complimentary pearl for your big asymmetrical balls. This ball has some room for error and responds well on most conditions. Trevor Kopas Pro Shop Operator Storm Staff Ambassador #Bigboybowling
Layout:L 4.25 x 4.25 x 1 OOB surface Polished w/Power Edge Broken Down THS SPI description: Your new favorite pearlized ball has been hatched to help advance your game in ways you didn’t know you needed. Now some will say, “hey, I’ve seen that core shape before” and to those we say, “yes, yes you have.” BUT what we can also say is that you have never seen this MAXED-OUT version of this core shape before known as Rondure™ MaxD. That’s right, our team of mad scientists in the R&D Lab pushed this core shape to its limits by changing the densities of both the block and the slug on bottom to create the highest RG value and highest Differential value this part has ever seen. From its inception, this mild asymmetric shape was created to emulate the motion of a symmetric core shape with a balance hole in it. Fast forward to this newest version, and well, even though previous models were fantastic, this version is without a doubt the longest and most continuous down lane that we have ever seen. But it doesn’t stop there, the mad scientists in the R&D Lab also managed to formulate a brand-new nano-free coverstock material during this development and testing process as well. That’s right, the versatile response (V-R1) cover formulation was created to handle a wide range of oil conditions and oil types. From the fresh, to the transition, to the burn, this cover provides easy push through the front of the lane while consistently responding to friction down lane without getting out of control. My Take: Smoother with a more pronounced bite the a UC2. The new VR1 Pearl cover is stronger yet cleaner than eTrax Pearl. The modified Rondure MaxD core provides a rounder reaction shape compared to my UC2. Definitely a transition piece or high friction THS in league. Being a tweener I'm very confident when switching to the Gremlin from the bigger asyms and symmetrical balls. Clean with a readable reaction is best I can decsribe the Gremlin. Higher revrates and 2 handers will probably have the most fun curving the lanes, but us Tweeners and strokers will have the best control pearl on the market. The Gremlin features Roto Grip’s newest cover stock- V-R1 Pearl. Many have comped the Gremlin to the UC2 and I’d agree that pretty accurate. The pearl cover with power edge finish is pretty clean. The Rondure core that was in the UC2, UC3 and Tour Dynamix has been modified (maxed out) in the Gremlin by changing the density of the block and slug. As a result, the RG and Dif of the Gremlin are higher than the previous balls with Rondure core. For the 15# Gremlin, the RG/Dif/PSA is 2.50/0.58/0.010. The cover core combination results in a clean, easy push through the front part of the lane and rounded continuous down lane motion. So far, I have found on a house pattern the Gremlin still reads when I got it in the oil. When I circled it with my normal release, it did get a little forward as it entered the pocket. But then, I changed my hand position to get a little more tilt and rotation and boom, the Gremlin finished over the 8 pin. On the 44 foot PBA Hardwick pattern, I tried it at the end of a 7 game block, and it read the dry a little too quick. When I opened up my angle to that dry, it missed it. But that is what I would expect on that pattern. The Gremlin is probably not meant for a longer pattern which has been broken down with straight angles through the front. Bottom line, I’d say this is a good, versatile pearl medium asym ball which will fit right in between your strong asyms like the X-Cell, Physix Black Out, RST Hyperdrive, and weaker VEBO, Typhoon, type balls. I drilled mine pin up 2.5 buffer, 4 ½ from my PAP with PSA 4.
I drilled my Gremlin 4.5 x 4 x 4.25 with the goal of bridging the gap between my strong asymmetric balls and my more traditional symmetrical pieces. After throwing it for a while, I quickly fell in love with the shape it creates on the lanes. The Rondure MaxD core paired with the V-R1 Pearl coverstock gives me a clean look through the fronts and mids, but what really stands out is how hard it corners downlane — even more than some of my symmetrical balls. It offers a really unique motion: predictable but punchy, and versatile enough to play with shape without sacrificing control. If you're trying to fill that space in your lineup between big asymmetrics and smooth symmetrical pieces, the Gremlin is absolutely worth checking out. It’s already becoming a favorite among bowlers and I can see it being a must-have as the season gets going.
The Gremlin is Roto Grip’s newest addition to the HP3 line. This asymmetrical pearl reactive is featured with the Rondure MaxD core, along with the new V-R1 Pearl Cover stock, resulting in a clean, skid/flip motion bowlers would love to have in their bag. In my opinion, this ball would be an upgrade to the UC2, only stronger. Ball layout: 70 x 5 3/8 x 40. I was quite impressed with the ball motion the Gremlin can create. Goes through the front part of the lanes with ease, very clean, strong backend motion with some skid/flip shenanigans. This can be a great transitional ball once friction starts to show on the lanes and bowlers start moving right/left with their target/feet respectively. First ball out of the bag can also be an option if you are attacking a medium/short oil pattern, where the Gremlin can tend to read early enough and control the mid lane roll, saving its energy for backend motion. If I had to define where this ball would fit in my bag, it’d be right in between my big core ball (Hyperdrive), and benchmark ball (Optimum Idol Solid/Rockstar). The Gremlin is one versatile ball you should consider having in your bag. It’s a mischief made to strike!! Be sure to stop by your local pro shop and drill one up today!! Thomas Coco (Storm Staffer)
I went with something extreme for me and this ball did not disappoint. This ball lets me play a little straighter to start but as the transition happens it lets me go left and the ball still has plenty of energy to get back to the pocket. This is going to be a good addition to anyone’s bag.
The Gremlin is GOOD! I would recommend drilling the ball with a longer pin to pap. Even though the cover on the Gremlin is cleaner, the core still wants to flare. It is best used later in the block or when you need to open your angles. The core is very strong, so one of my recommendations would be to drill the ball a little weaker (Longer pin to pap) to help the ball clear the Midlane when having to move left. I see this ball getting a lot of play and because there isn’t much asymmetry to the ball it fits the gap between balls like: The Optimum Idol, Summits and Sublimes and Ion Max.
The bowling ball’s awesome and happy with it!

I picked up the Gremlin as a replacement for my Ebonite Tornado, which I had for 17 years. I haven't bowled in 2 years and scored a 184 with the Gremlin. I would have to say this is a great ball even for beginner-novice players. I even see pro's using it online a lot and adding it to their 6 ball arsenal.

The Roto Grip Gremlin is Roto Grips newest HP3 line ball. The Gremlin features the Rondure MaxD core wrapped in V-R1 pearl and finished with power edge. The Gremlin reminds me a lot of the Rubicon UC2 from a few years back. The Gremlin is very stable for such a clean piece without sacrificing the ability to get through the friction in the front part of the lane with ease. The Gremlin for me has been the perfect 2 ball in league allowing me to circle the whole lane or trap the pocket based on my hand position. The Gremlin is now available from any Storm VIP Pro shop! Review Video: https://youtu.be/gYynVBLJJl0?si=-xRRRx9zpwIKQh2w
Layout: 5 x 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 Surface: Power Edge Rev Rate: 470 Tilt: 13* The new Gremlin brings back the Rondure core but now Maxed out in its current version. Slightly higher RG and differential gives the ball ample hitting power on medium to heavy oil. The coverstock is the brand-new V-R1 Pearl coverstock which creates versatile ball reaction on a wide array of patterns. The ball reaction of this one reminds me of Storm's root ball reaction of true skid flip motion. This ball gives an impressive amount of angle down lane while still being controlled. I was able to test this on my 44ft typical house shot. On the fresh, the response to friction was actually very high as the backends were clean. The angular motion got to the pocket fairly easily but was not smooth enough to tackle all the front head oil and clean backend. The rockstar here would be a much better option on the fresh. As the lanes transitioned and I needed to move left with my feet, the Gremlin did not stop coming. Very strong and angular backend motion while still getting down the lane with ease. This ball for me definitely loves the left to right motion more then up the lane. The further left, I got on the lane, the better this ball still became. There was no disappointment of backend angle from all areas of the lane. As I got the ball more to the drier part of the lane, I saw ample hook but sometimes over hooked when angles weren't the best. The Gremlin has a good shot to be a good fresh ball with the right layout but certainly shines in transition and carry down. A pin down layout would help smooth the angularity of this ball if that is what is desired. I would recommend this ball more towards bowlers who want to have that angular motion and who enjoy opening the lanes up more. This ball has worked for me on a variety of patterns from medium to long lengths and medium to heavy oil. Compared to the Rubicon UC2, I saw more strength out of the Gremlin but pretty identical backend angle. If you really loved the UC2 and angular ball motion, I definitely recommend this one! Drilled my Roto Grip Gremlin (4 x 4 x 2). Medium Rev rate and medium speed bowler. The Roto Grip Gremlin is silky smooth through the front part of the lane storing energy to make a strong angular movement coming off the end of the pattern smashing the pins as the Roto Grip Gremlin drives through the pin deck. The Roto Grip Gremlin will be a great ball for lighter oil pattern or after the transition has settled down and the pattern has started to break down. #stormnation #SquadRG #strikingworldwide

The Gremlin compared to the Rockstar was longer with a sharper backend. The Attention Star was earlier than the Gremlin with a more foward motion downlane. The Gremlin will give you a strong backend motion but be a cheaper price point than the high performance balls. This is a great addition to the Roto Grip Family.

The Rondure MaxD features a higher differential than the Rubicon series balls did. They wrapped the new core in the clean V-R1 cover. The cover allows the ball to use all that diff in the back of the lane. The Power-Edge finish allows the ball to grip the lane well. I tested the Gremlin for the first time during league. I was pretty excited about this release as what I've seen of it made it look ideal for use in transition. I took it out game 2 when I started to lose the front of the lane. While it was noticeably cleaner than the ball I started with (Cove) it did still see a bit more of the mid-lane than I was expecting. My first instinct was to move noticeably left and increase my angle through he front of the lane. The ball tipped and little earlier than I was expecting and wasn't as quick in the back-end as I'd anticipated so I moved my feet back to the right, ending up only a couple of boards left of where I had been throwing the cove. I feel that the cover sees a little too much of the front of the lane in our house. As I've mentioned in numerous reviews our front panels hook ALOT. In a house without so much early friction the ball would probably look quicker down-lane but for me it smoothed out a little too much probably due to it using too much energy too soon. As a result this ball has been more of a first ball out for me, and that's where I've had the most success with it. Once I have to cover boards can move from it into a ball like the HyRoad 40 pretty seamlessly, where I had expected them to be balls I would use in a similar spot with just shape differences. This ball should be pretty good for bowlers with less rev-rate as its cleaner cover helps it clean the front but it's strong core give you good motion. I can recommend this ball for other pro shop guys looking to match up with your senior and lady bowlers.
I love the gremlin. At the price of 165$ the performance it provides is amazing. I highly recommend this ball for anyone who’s looking for a new ball for the start of League season!
This ball says it all being an Asymmetrical Pearl! It does have the Power Edge Finish out of the box so I left it that way. This ball reads the lane very well, I could actually move a little right then with the Attention Star. For me this is a very versatile ball. You can swing this ball if you want (15-20 at the arrows) or play up the boards (7-10 at the arrows) And still get a really great look. This might be a great ball to start with, or toss my Rock Star, then after seeing it starting to hook s little early switch to the Gremlin. It seriously rolls really good and its going to be in my bag this coming bowling season! I kept it out of the box for a few sport patters I bowled on. With the house shot coming soon, hitting it with a 3000 - 4000 pad....maybe.
The layout on this ball is 4 x 4 3/8 x 2 3/8 (or 50 x 4 x 40 using the dual angle layout). If you were a fan of the Roto Grip Rubicon series, you will really like this ball! It’s a remake of the Rubcion UC2… great length, round shape and continuous through the pins. The Gremlin will be a great late game 1 to game 2 ball in league. The Gremlin can also be used with different surface adjustments to fit anyone’s style of play. The Gremlin is a motion that I was looking for to have in my bag to switch from one of my bigger asymmetrical pearl balls, such as the Attention Star or an Equinox to provide me a nice round shape. I’m so glad to have it this is my arsenal. Make sure you get yours!
The newest addition to the RG HP3 Line is the Roto Grip Gremlin. The Gremlin uses a modified Rondure core which was in the UC2 series and Tour Dynamix. With a brand new Pearl Coverstock (V-R1). I drilled mine with a 4.5 x 4 x 4.5 pin down layout. The Gremlin has a high Diff Core with a very clean cover. Which the Gremlin creates an angular motion down lane! Even with the big motor the Gremlin gets down the lane with ease for an asymmetrical pearl and responds to friction pretty quickly. Very good motion from the Gremlin. Roto Grip has delivered another success to their HP3 line with the Gremlin. The Gremlin is a well-balanced combination of Rondure MaxD core and V-R1 Pearl reactive coverstock. Straighter players will love the Gremlins' ability to get dialed in to fit their tighter lines and yet produce that powerful roll and continuation we need to keep us striking. Further, for straighter players, the Gremlin can be both a THS league staple and the step down from those big asymmetric cores and solid coverstock like the RST Hyperdrive. In either case, the Gremlin is a great choice. So stop into your local Storm VIP Pro Shop today and see where the Roto Grip Gremlin fits in your arsenal for the fall season ahead. The new Roto Grip Gremlin is the newest piece in the HP3 line. The Gremlin features the Rondure Maxd Core and the V-R1 pearl reactive coverstock finished with Power Edge. At 15 pounds the RG is 2.50 and the differential is .058 with an intermediate differential of .010. I drilled my Gremlin 5x4x2 which puts the pin above my ring finger. For me the Gremlin is a great transition ball when my RockStar is starting up too soon. The Gremlin provides more length than the RockStar but still reads the midlane. However, the backend motion on the Gremlin is much stronger than the RockStar. Some people have said this ball reminds them of the Rubicon UC2. This core is like the Rubicon cores, however the density has been changed in the new core. For me the Gremlin reads the lane sooner than the UC2 and has a more controlled, yet strong backend motion. The UC2 was a more skip flip reaction to me. The Gremlin will be a much more versatile and more user-friendly option than the UC2. I am able to use the Gremlin sooner and longer than other pearl reactives. If you are looking for a ball to go to after your big hooking solid ball, look no further than the Roto Grip Gremlin!
My layout on the Gremlin was one of my favorites of 4.5 x 4 x 2-VLS. I left it at box surface as Power Edge on SPI balls has been a plus at the higher friction surfaces, I have been on this summer. I threw it on some PBA conditions namely the Monacelli-40 pattern in a PBA50 regional last month. The GREMLIN is very skid/flippy to me in the box condition which on this pattern was almost a detriment as it would get in behind the headpin and flat ten a lot or move a couple right and watch it big four. When I got it back to my league, it was a big motion in the back end of the lane. I was able to tame it down by throwing it flatter and faster and then I had the world with it. Compared to PHAZE AI, it was sharper down lane and not as early. To me the GREMLIN was a ball down option when the PHAZE AI was starting to straighten out in the back and stopped hitting/hooking. Compared to the IQ AI and the GREMLIN was a lot quicker and stronger. the IQ AI was a good ball to play off the GREMLIN when it was getting too sideways down lane. Plug the GREMLIN in as a big ball but be ready to knock the shine off it even if just slightly. It evens the motion out some and makes it more useable on more conditions.
Roto Grip Gremlin My updated specs: Rev rate 420’s, ball speed 15.3 to 15.8 mph off the hand, axis tilt of 16 degrees and axis rotation of 70 degrees, PAP is 3 15/16th up 3/16th. The new cover V-R1 adjusted to the fresh and transition well, and being nano “free” the cover provides a consistent reaction shot after shot and game after game. I have drilled 2 with 2 different centers in mind. The first Gremlin is 2 x 6 x 3 and the second one 5 x 4.5 x 3.5. The first one is designed to be controllable front to back and be more stable for me on the Pro Lane equipped center and the second one was drilled and laid out for the center with HPL in mind, more length and little less backend which is needed on that surface. Both Gremlin work well from the first shot in practice all the way through 3-5 games on both house and sport patterns. The Gremlins are allowing me to stay in the ball longer and just make minor adjustments during the matches and tournaments. These 2 are going to be in the main set of balls for me for the foreseeable future. Wrapped around this big engine (core) is the brand new Versatile Response (V-R1) pearl reactive cover, designed to give easy length and a consistent response down the lane. Mine was drilled 55 x 4.5 x 35, similar to my Origin EX. This ball had me well left of my standard line, targeting around 16 at the arrows to around 9-10 downlane. Overall ball reaction and carry (beside the 3 solid 8’s) was good, but this ball would not be my first choice in this high friction environment. I look forward to throwing this one on newer synthetic lanes where some transition has occurred. On the 2nd from last shot, I threw the Origin EX, which predictably grabbed the lane much sooner and went through the nose. The following shot found success moving 3-2 left from the Gremlin, and I finished with the Gremlin. The Gremlin takes the place of the Optimum Idol Pearl in the Roto Grip HP3 lineup, much like the Rockstar did for the Optimum Idol. While I thought that it was unusual to discontinue the Optimum Idol pair so quickly, I think Roto Grip has actually made improvements that make no sense to have both the Optimum Idol Pearl and the Gremlin in the same lineup. The Gremlin introduces the all new Versatile Response V-R1 Pearl coverstock but brings back and enhanced version of the Rondure core from the Rubicons called the Rondure MaxD Core. Interestingly, they chose not to go with AI on the Gremlin, as AI will lower the RG and increase the differential. The Gremlin’s design intent was to push the RG higher, so AI doesn’t make sense there and USBC’s maximum allowed differential is 0.060, they wouldn’t want to run the risk of producing a ball pushing the maximum differential. The look of the Gremlin and the specs really seem to point to an updated version of the Rubicon UC2 - a great ball that’s deserving of an update. I believe the Rock Star will be an excellent ball to start the night with and then move to the Gremlin as the heads start to get beat up and you need to get further down the lane. The HP3 line has a reputation of having some of the best bang-for-your-buck balls on the market and the Gremlin is no exception Layout: 5 x 4 x 2 My Specs - Speed - 16 mph, Rev Rate - 315. PAP 5 1/8 x 7/8 Up
Layout: 45 x 4 3/8 x 35 Ohhh baby - the Rubicon UC2 was one of my favorite Roto Grip balls in quite some time; I even drilled a second one after I wore the first one out. Luckily, the Gremlin is a beefed up second coming of that ball, and not a second too late. Increasing the core differential helps it be even more secure in oil, while the cover still gets it easily down lane before traction sets in. This ball kills medium to medium-dry house patterns. It is still a bit too clean for fresh or heavier shots out of the box, though. The Attention Star is the perfect ball to have a step above this Gremlin, as it is a bit earlier and smoother. All in all, this is a great skid-flip ball for medium oil!
This has become my Go To Ball !!! Great reaction for my style of game!!

I drilled the new gremlin to give me a smooth yet clean and strong reaction down lane, and that's exactly what it gave me! I stacked the CG and the Mass Bias up the middle of my span. This naturally give me a smooth, delayed reaction with any ball. The Gremlin has the Rondure MaxD core inside the V-R1 Pearl cover. This strong core/cover combo will naturally give you a smooth reaction, but the gremlin is something special! The Gremlin fits the ball 3 spot in my back for a 6 ball arsenal, and i see this ball staying in the bag for a very long time! 10/10 from me!
Gets down the lane with a quick move towards the pocket. If you get too far out it has a little trouble bogging down and getting back but overall great transition ball. Not sure why they would have it under a "heavy oil" ball
