Performance Analysis

Performance Analysis

Testing revealed the Roto Grip UFO to be a dependable heavy-oil choice with a notably smooth, early-reading motion. Independent reviewers observed the ball on an exceptionally worn league pattern with significant oil carrydown and track wear from extended holiday bowler traffic—conditions far more challenging than typical fresh oil. Despite the degraded lane surface, the ball demonstrated commendable consistency. The reactive solid coverstock produced immediate hook off the friction areas while resisting over-reaction; the ball read the lane predictably whether thrown from straighter angles or aggressive positions, allowing the bowler to make precise hand adjustments rather than chase wild ball motion.

What stood out during testing was the UFO’s ability to maintain pin action even when thrown into heavy volume zones. The asymmetric core generated strong backend reaction without losing control through the front and midlane phases, which is critical on heavily oiled patterns where many balls either skid too long or overreact prematurely. The reviewer’s shot repeating improved noticeably once the appropriate launch angle was identified—a sign of a forgiving, predictable ball reaction. On the worn pattern, success required positioning the ball into the drier edge areas rather than the heavily trafficked middle, but the ball responded consistently to these adjustments.

One notable finding: the UFO’s aggressive reading motion meant that in the oil-laden midlane areas typical of this worn condition, the ball required disciplined hand control to prevent early hook that would eliminate backend energy. This is not a weakness but rather a characteristic that rewards technique and consistency. Testers remained eager to evaluate the ball on a fresh pattern to observe how the same motion profile would perform without the pronounced carrydown interference.

Who Is This Ball For?

The Roto Grip UFO is well-suited for bowlers who play heavy-oil sport or league conditions and value a strong, early-reading motion that responds to hand adjustments. This ball will appeal to strokers and tweeners with moderate to high rev rates who can manage the aggressive coverstock through proper hand position and release. Bowlers who struggle with balls that skid too long in volume will find the UFO’s immediate reading action beneficial; those preferring mid-lane length should look elsewhere.

This is also an excellent choice for bowlers seeking a benchmark heavy-oil piece that delivers predictable reaction even under compromised lane conditions. The UFO rewards shot discipline and consistency rather than forgiving loose technique, making it ideal for competitive bowlers willing to adapt their approach rather than expect the ball to do the work. It excels when the bowler can commit to a line and trust repeatable adjustments, and it will not perform optimally for players who alternate between aggressive and passive launching styles.

Bowlers Say

Bowlers say the UFO is an extremely strong asymmetrical solid that hooks more than most balls in their bags. They praise its ability to handle heavy oil conditions while maintaining backend energy and pin carry, unlike many strong balls that burn up early. Most effective on medium to heavy oil patterns for both sport and house conditions.

Looking for the next big asymmetrical in your bag? Look no further than the Roto Grip UFO. The UFO has replaced the original Halo (Solid - Asym) in the HP4 lineup. Discernible differences between the UFO and Halo saw more defined mid-lane motion and shape with the UFO. The UFO still provides that heavy roll as seen with the Halo although with the increased mid-lane potential there is more opening up of the lane with the UFO. The UFO features the new E.T. Core with built in cavity to mimic the benefits of a weight hole. With an RG of 2.52, a differential of 0.054 and a PSA of 0.016 this ball will have no shortage of creating motion in the mid-lane and continuation down lane. Also, the UFO features a new cover (MicroTrax-S20) which is an expansion of the famous MicroTrax technology. This cover will increase traction even in the heaviest of oils. This ball will be a must have for those medium to heavier oil patterns whether there sport or house conditions. Make sure you visit your local Storm VIP Pro Shop to Drill It Up! Drilled up the UFO this weekend and here is my review on it. Im an average bowler, matched speed and revs high track, I drilled the ball 45x4.5x70. Ball was drilled pin down. For me this was one of the first pin down balls so wanted to see what kind of reaction I could get. I tossed it on a beat up house shot, let me say that this ball was really strong off the spot the back end was really smooth. I think the motion that this ball provides is something that is not out currently. This ball definitely is going to need some oil with the Micro Tax 20 cover. I think that tournaments players will need this in their bag. Roto grips new core the “Equalizer Cavity “simulates that there is a weight hole and provides great motion on the ball. As a low speed player this ball is really strong. For me personally I think this ball is one of the strongest balls out in either the Storm or Rotogrip line.

The UFO is a ball you will use to control the fresh and/or open the lane up. Patterns used for review are HP modified. Pattern A: 42Ft, 28.56 Mls, 5:1 ratio Pattern B: 44Ft, 27 Mls, 2:1 ratio Drill: 55X5X35 PLAY The UFO out of box comes 2000 grit and able to read the front/mids and get in motion. For this review I played 3 games on a house modified pattern and a sport compliant pattern. Pattern A: As play started, I gave the ball room to right playing 15 to 5. This ball quickly revved up and read the lane. As I played the ball farther right the UFO got into a quick roll. As play continued, I had to move more inside with the UFO as the 2000 grit became a little over/under. In order to keep the UFO in play I needed to keep it inside the oil line and just inside the early friction right. Pattern B: The UFO for this particular pattern played better when the line remained tighter from the inside or more from the right. Originally, I rolled this ball right after the previous 3 games on pattern A. With the surface having some oil it played cleaned through the front with a little more motion down lane through the mids. I took the surface back to out of box and rolled another game. The UFO started motion early to mid but stayed and held line. NOTE A: The UFO is able to open up a house pattern for lower rev players and allow the stronger release players to get around the rest of the field if they chose to. NOTE B: The UFO is definitely a ball to open up a long sport pattern or stay tight early. LOW DOWN: Early read on the UFO is to keep this for a sport pattern if you’re a high rev bowler needed something for the fresh early or when in need to control the inside. On house pattern it was very powerful but a bit too much surface it you are trying to rev it up and already have a strong release. For moderate releases it will be dependent on if your looking for a ball to use for 3 games or to control the fresh or bleed the breakdown. Just depends on your style and needs. I personally would use this ball on sport OB and house with compound finish just to get it down lane a little further.

The newest addition to the HP4 line in the Roto Grip family the new UFO! This new piece has the MicroTrax-S20 Coverstock which is 2000 Grit Abralon wrapped around the E.T. Core which stands for Equalizer Technology! This UFO is a new monster for heavier lane conditions. My UFO that I drilled is 5 inches away from my pap which is a weaker layout for me but this ball digs through the oil more than any ball I’ve thrown and doesn’t stop hooking. My strongest ball is my Gravity Evolve and for me this hooks about 2-3 boards more and continues more. i was a big fan of the Halo and this is now my new favorite from the Roto Grip family that hooks. Go your local pro shop and get yours for a ball that hooks.
