Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive Solid Review

The Roto Grip Hyperdrive comes with the MicroTrax Solid Reactive, RST + A.I. Core, and 2000-grit surface. This is the 4th ball stateside in the RST line and Roto’s new big asym ball. With the RG being higher on this ball I expected it to get a little more length and more pop down lane even with the big cover and it does just that. I have the Hyperdrive below the ION Max and it is not as early but in the same strength category, just a touch longer with more shape. The Hyperdrive should be more usable on your typical house shot and give you more shape down lane when you need it on the heavier sport patterns. I have the Gem as the strongest, ION Max is next, and then I put the Hyperdrive after the Max strength wise front to back on the lanes. This is going to be a home run from Roto Grip! Layout: 5 x 3 ½ x 2 ½ Surface 4000 abralon Rev rate: 470 Tilt: 13* Rotation: 60* The RST Hyperdrive brings AI technology to the RST core for the first time and is paired with the Microtrax solid coverstock found on the Original Gem. The combination brings a cleaner core with strong midlane strength for heavier oil conditions. If you bowl on aging lane surfaces like I do, you'll certainly appreciate this ball. The RST X1 has been one of my favorite balls on the Roto Grip side and I was really excited for this one. I brought the surface up to 4000 because of how well my Gem did at this surface for my league. For my 44ft typical house shot, the Hyperdrive did not disappoint. The cleaner core and cover surface got the ball easily through the front of the lane and the strong coverstock under the 4000 got the ball to still read the midlane strong and earlier enough to continue well. I was able to use it easily on the fresh seeing strong midlane and ample continuation down lane. The overall strength of the ball still forced me a little further left on the fresh than typical but it had no problem making the right move in the backend. In fact, I never had any fear that the ball would not hook. As the lanes transitioned, I generally have trouble getting the ball to slow down in the 44ft of oil as the lanes tend to get more wet dry. The Hyperdrive hooked enough in the oil where that over under reaction was gone. I did have to move my eyes into the oil some more to stop the ball from over hooking but again had no issue. As the lanes transitioned again, I was able to continue to move left and see strong shape still through the pins. I was able to use the Hyperdrive for all 3 games of league with ease which is a rarity for me. Compared to the X-Cell, I saw an earlier and stronger overall move. I recommend this for anyone who wants a ball for the fresh that wants to see something a little more length before a strong move down lane than traditional asymmetrical solid balls. Lower Rev rates will also enjoy this one due to its coverstock strength. Heavier oil volumes and sport patterns will bode well with this ball as well. Certainly bring the surface up on this ball if the out of box surface is too early rolling.

So as the older and lower rev player my concern was going to be the out of box surface. I can tell you that is not an issue with this ball. Now for lane play I was able to use this ball for a full night and depending on how quick your house shot goes away this ball can be a one game ball as it was for me on my Monday league before they got super cliffed, but on Thursday at a center that has a league pattern that holds up very well this was an all three game ball. Other factors would also be if you change the surface. I decided to keep the 2000 on it and for me it matches up very well. Introducing Roto Grip’s newest addition to the HP4 series, the RST Hyperdrive! The RST is back, only this time, it is featured with AI technology. With the famous MicroTrax Solid Coverstock and the returning RST core, Roto Grip felt the need to create a super aggressive asymmetrical ball to combat those medium/heavy oil conditions. With the higher RG rating, this ball will be more continuous down lane no matter what proper sand grit you’d prepare it to. Ball layout: 45 x 4.5 x 30, same layout in comparison to my Roto Grip X-Cell. I tested my RST Hyperdrive at my home center of Cortlandt Lanes in Cortlandt Manor, NY. Contested on the 43ft THS, the Hyperdrive didn’t disappoint. Out of the box finish at 2000 grit, this ball gave me more length, more control down lane in the oil, creating enough energy and shape through the pins. I found the Hyperdrive to be a little cleaner and longer in comparison to my X-Cell. The X-Cell had more angle and an early read, but with similar results with the motion finish at the end. I would find the Hyperdrive to be more suitable with less friction on the lanes, that way you can play the oil as long as you can until the track area opens up and you can no longer control the pocket. Per example, the straighter I was with my feet and boards, the better results I could get. As I moved right (left handed) with my feet and swinging it into the friction, the less results it produced. Putting some shine on the ball can also be a factor if you are looking for cleaner results. Overall, I was mighty impressed with the ball motion the Hyperdrive can create and can benefit those bowlers contesting those medium/heavy lane conditions. The layout on this ball is 45 x 4 x 30. I have been looking for an asymmetrical solid that allows me to be versatile on all parts of the lane. With the MicroTrax coverstock, it allows me to play in heavier volumes of oil, while the high RG RST (Roto Star Tour) core provides a great amount of energy transfer once it finds fricition. This is a great ball to have on fresh medium to heavier oil patterns. On a house shot, this ball works great for me on those cliffed or wet/dry patterns. I was able to play more on the inside part of the lane, and the RST Hyperdrive helps blend it great! This ball is definitely a step down from the ION Max, which may be a little too strong in the midlane. You remember how good the RST X1 and RST X2 were. They were so good I still have them in my arsenal today. In fact, I have two RST X1’s. Now enter Roto Grip’s newest release to combat heavier oil patterns of today. The RST Hyperdrive features the Microtrax solid reactive cover which was on the RST-X1 and Gem, two of Roto Grip’s greatest balls of all time. The mica particles and 2000 grit out of box on the Microtrax cover creates plenty of traction for medium to high volume patterns. A.I. technology has improved the RST (Roto Star Tour) core that was in all previous RSTs. It has the highest RG (2.52) of the current reactives in the SPI brand product line (similar to RST-X1’s 2.53) which ensures it doesn’t get too forward too early. The 0.055 diff gives it plenty of flare potential to have continuous motion downlane. That combination results in a pretty versatile ball at the top end of your arsenal. You can go up the lane as well as open up the front on a variety of patterns before you have to ball down to an Attention Star S2 or X-Cell. For comparison, within the current line, the RST Hyperdrive is similar to the Ion Max, but stores a little more energy and therefore has a little more backend. I drilled mine pin up, 4 ½ from my PAP with PSA 4.

Featuring the same cover as the Gem, the Hyperdrive is very similar overall, but there are quite a few differences. The Hyperdrive is slightly higher RG, meaning it gets down the lane quite a bit more than the GEM and the diff is higher too, meaning it backends more. Basically Roto Grip made a cleaner snappier version of the GEM, what more could you ask for! There were a lot of times my Gem just bogged down after a game or two, but the Hyperdrive won’t have that same issue. Often on flatter patterns I need a strong solid to control the fronts and midlane but you usually give up backend when you do that. The Hyperdrive gives you the control with the cover, but with the AI high RG/Diff core, you get the backend too! Perfect combination in a solid asym!

I drilled the new RST Hyperdrive 5x4x2 to give me a bit more push through the lane. My initial thought after throwing the first ball was "This thing hooks!". The RST A.I core inside the MicroTrax solid cover gives this ball the early motion, but allows the ball to get a bit further down lane than most balls with the microtrax cover. This ball give me flashbacks to the reality in terms of a big chuggy ball that still hooks down lane. I will definitely be using this as the first ball out of my bag in tournaments. I highly recommend this ball to anyone who is on the speed dominant side, or anyone who needs to fill the big early spot in their bag. 10/10 from me!

Drilled this piece with the Pin up above the Middle Finger, CG kicked out 1” from the palm, and 1” Left of the Mass Bias. 5x4x3. I threw this piece on a fresh house pattern. Out of Box ball motion started in the mids with a controllable backend reaction through the pins. I compared this to the XCell. XCell was 2-2 left. Started earlier in the mids with a sharper backend motion. This piece fits between the XCell and Rockstar. If you are looking for a heavy oil piece this is the one to get.

The Roto Grip RST Hyper Drive is a good benchmark for heavy oil patterns! The 4 x 4 x 2 layout seems to be working well for me on heavy oil patterns. It's impressive that the RST Hyper Drive handles the mid-lanes transition effectively while storing power for the back end. Being able to play multiple angles, whether it's a direct line to the pocket or creating shape from right to left, gives you a lot of versatility. The way it throws pins around the pin deck effortlessly must be quite satisfying to watch!

The new ball in the Roto Grip HP4 line is the RST Hyperdrive. The design team at SPI took the original core from RST-1 (RST (Roto Star Tour) + A.I. Core and wrapped it with very successful Gem Coverstock(MicroTrax Solid Reactive) I drilled my 4 3/4 x 4 x 4 1/2 pin down. I have been drilling the bigger asymmetrical pin down with my slower ball speed to help get them down the lane easier. I am very impressed with how much continuation that I have with RST. On the standard house shot I was able to open the lane up. The RST handled the puddle with ease and still enough energy to get the ten out. When hitting the dry a little early the RST just went into a roll and didn't over hook down lane. With the great colors and great roll the RST is very easy to spot going down the lane. For a solid cover this RST hooks pretty good off the friction, still considered a slow response ball but still give good forgiveness. Overall its the strongest over all ball in the lineup. But I actually have the Attention star S2 a little earlier and less down lane. The RST is great addition to anyone's arsenal. The RST Hyper Drive marks my first dive into the RST line. I skipped the first two releases and passed on the third—it just wasn’t my style, aesthetics-wise. But the Hyper Drive’s color scheme, reminiscent of rainbow sherbet, has quietly won me over. With so many modern balls packing a serious punch, I struggle to use them on typical house shots, often drilling them with the pin in my middle finger to tame the reaction. For the RST Hyper Drive, I opted for a 6-inch Pin-to-PAP, and I’m genuinely blown away by how straight I can play with it. It delivers the extra length I need while still packing enough punch when it hits the pocket. If I swing it too wide, it’ll fight its way back—sometimes leaving a 10-pin—but as long as I keep it in front of me, this ball impresses me more with every shot.

One of the strongest asym solids to date, the Hyperdrive wants to read the lane early and provide plenty of continuation. In terms of comparisons, I find the Gem to be smoother and more forward than the Hyperdrive. The Gem is better for closed angles and playing up the lane whereas the Hyperdrive will allow more left to right (for righties) and more continuation through the pins. The Hyperdrive adapts well to surfaces adjustments as well as polish. This ball is designed for fresh and heavier volume conditions. If you're looking for your next big asym solid, the Hyperdrive will be a great option to have in your bag.

This design is intended to maximize control with more hook potential then previous RST offerings. Right away this ball shows itself as a number one asym in a player's arsenal. The impressive part of this ball is that for how early the ball digs into the lane it still allows you to open your angles a bit more than some other big asyms in this category. At times, "big asyms" tend to quit and the next ball down is not quite enough. For me, I brought my RST Hyperdrive to 4K on a spinner then took it back down to the recommended 2K finish. For me, it really brought this ball to life. Due to my slower ball speed OOB can make these type of balls hook a bit earlier than I prefer. The RST Hyperdrive should fill the gap on longer and higher volume patterns and will allow you to stay in a bit longer then previous releases. If you are a straighter player or have a lot of ball speed you'll want to consider this ball as an option. For me, I'll use the RST Hyperdrive to refresh the top of my bag and use most often on higher volume sport conditions. You should expect a continuous, strong reaction throughout the lane. As previous noted above, the RST Hyperdrive will work best on longer and higher volume patterns. This ball is designed for higher volumes of oil. I drilled mine using the layout of 55x5x35 which allows this ball to see the midlane and still have good down lane motion. The RST HyperDrive from Roto Grip is the newest addition to the HP4 Line and it’s been extremely good so far. I was a huge fan of the RST line in previous years dating back to the RST X1 and RST X2. Those balls rolled extremely good and when we received word that an updated RST was being developed, I was excited to get my hands on one. The HyperDrive features the older RST (Roto Star Tour ) core boosted with A.I. core technology and it’s wrapped with the MicroTrax coverstock. The numbers show an RG of 2.52 and a differential of .055 with a PSA of .017. I’ve drilled two so far and love both. The first one I drilled is mapped out as 4.5 x 4 x 2. This puts the pin near my ring finger and a stacked CG along with the mass bias just to the right of my thumb. Because the RG is higher compared to an Ion Max or Origin, it doesn’t dig super early in the front of the lane but it still provides a nice shape down lane. I’ve been able to keep my angles in front of me as well as shape it some if needed and there’s been plenty of giddy up down lane. The second one I drilled is 5.5 x 5 x 2. This puts the pin above my middle finger and I also shined this one with 4000 and water on the ball spinner. When I need to open my angles but don’t need a super clean / quick ball, this RST HyperDrive is a home run. It’s clean but not too quick and doesn’t miss the mid-lane. The HyperDrive compliments the RockStar, Ion Max, IQ AI, and Origin perfectly! Go drill one!

Pattern: 42’ Scorpion Layout: 30 x 4 1/2 x 30 Surface: Box (2000 abralon) The new RST-Hyperdrive really proves that the name of the ball is accurate. This ball wants to grab and dig super early without losing all of its energy before getting to the pins. This asymmetrical solid features the RST weight block, an A.I. Outer core, MicroTrax Solid cover and finished with 2000 abralon creating a balance that allows more overall motion down lane where us bowlers need it most. On Scorpion 42’ I was able to play up 8 and the ball had no trouble pushing through the oil into the pocket. I was even able to open up throwing 15-7 and didn’t lose any motion. This piece will fit in well into anyone’s arsenal that is lacking a great Asymmetric solid for both house shot or sport conditions. Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive Ball Info: RST core with A.I. outer core with MicroTrax solid cover stock – box condition is 2000 grit and is used at that 2000 grit. Layout is 3 x 6 x 2 and used on 39ft and 42ft prior USBC tournament pattern. My updated specs: Rev rate 420’s, ball speed 15.3 to 15.8 mph off the hand, axis tilt of 16 degrees and axis rotation of 70 degrees, PAP is 3 15/16th up 3/16th. Tested on Pro-lane panels at ABC North Lanes in Harrisburg, PA. The latest asymmetrical release from Roto Grip combines 2 great prior products with a new outer core. The very popular RST core that has been used in domestic and international releases for a few years has been updated with the A.I. outer core technology and pairing it up with the MICROTRAX cover provides a piece into the line up with have been missing since the GEM was discontinued. Since I am pretty set on my league arsenal, I decided to drill this RST Hyperdrive for tournament and sport patterns. I used the layout 3 x 6 x 2, which is like my weak THS layout, but with a little stronger pin. On the 39th foot pattern, where most everyone else go straight up the lane, I am able to go around them and still make good consistent shots to the pocket and able to stay in that area of the lane through most of the night. Where with prior equipment I was using, like the LEVEL, Optimum Idol, Rock Star and Equinox, the LEVEL and Rock Star were too weak to play up the lane and the O.I. and Equinox were too unstable and tended to give me over/under reactions when trying to play tighter lines to the pocket. The RST Hyperdrive is a “no-brainer” for me on sport patterns between 39 to 45ft. When practicing on THS, it was a home-run also when it came to using it after the lanes were beaten up a good bit. Will add this to my THS once my O.I. gets used up. But for now, my league bag will be Rock Star, Attention Star S2. The new Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive features the Roto Star Tour core featuring AI technology and wraps it in the highly successful MircoTrax solid coverstock. At 15 pounds this ball has an RG of 2.52, with a differential of .055 and an intermediate differential of .017. The Hyperdrive has a box finish of 2000 grit abralon. I drilled the Hyperdrive at 5 x 5 x 4 which puts the pin above my bridge. This is also the same drilling I put in my X3 and X1. The new Hyperdrive is about 2-3 boards more total hook for me than the X3 and about 4-5 boards more hook than the X1. With its box finish, this ball needs oil to succeed. The Hyperdrive features the same cover stock as the original Gem. The Hyperdrive is a tad cleaner than the Gem and is much more continuous on the backend. The Gem really labored when I opened my angles, but the Hyperdrive is much more versatile when it comes to going left to right. The Hyperdrive is the first ball out of my bag on heavy and longer patterns. Slower ball speeds will need to add some polish to the cover stock in order to be able find more use for this monster. On a house shot, I often find these bigger balls tend to either burn up off the friction and deflect through the pins or come off the spot too hard and go through the nose. I had neither of these issues with the Hyperdrive. I have kept a dull 2000 grit finish on my Hyperdrive and it has retained tremendous energy through the pins throughout a night of league. I was even able to continue moving my feet left while still throwing the ball to the friction and it retained continuation off the spot, something I have not seen out of other dull asym solids. This is definitely the strongest ball in my bag at the moment, and I think it would be a great fit for any player of any skill level.

I am slightly speed dominant, rev challenged 220-250ish, low tilt and high rotation. The Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive is a strong asymmetrical solid reactive with high flare potential. I drilled mine 30 x 5 1/4 x 30. My axis point is 4 3/8 over 1 3/8 up. I love this ball for medium to heavy oil condition. It reads early creating predictable and controllable ball motion when there’s a lot of oil volume. On a typical house shot I don’t get to use this ball due to the lower oil volume. used the Hyperdrive a few time and like to say it like the oil. i am a 10 to 120 avg bowler and got a 260 one game and was like wow this is a good ball.

i did do a review like to add i am 110 to 120 avg with a ball speed from 9.33 to 12.50 speed and the the ball really likes the oil i am righr handed and i start around the 3rd to 4th arrow to start from. the ball is grate for me on heavy oil patterns i do not have a gem but they say it is like the gem i would like to say it is a good ball for heavy oil patterns and will not let you down next to the x cwell witch i do have it is just as strong as far as hooking goses. As far as the colors gose it remindes meof the the bounces balls you gey in the 25 cents . i do love the color now it has grown on me and it is an amazing clean ball it is worth thinking thinking about getting for a first ball ,

I’ve bowled for over 50 years current average is 193… I’ve had this ball for about 2 months. It’s a step above my gem. The back end hit has significantly reduced my 10 pin leave… I’m happy with this ball.

Even if you clean your ball after usage, oil will get into this ball and won’t come out. Used a detox machine and still, no oil comes out. This makes the coverstock really weak, I mean REALLY weak. The ball barely hooks anymore and it just doesn’t feel like it should be worth 289 bucks. Not recommended for lots of usage.

got my first 300 with this ball you reallt need to follow throu with this ball and after a few game i went to around the 2 arrow when i did that i got my 300 game. i am really impressed with this ball and a guy i bowled with got the same ball and bowled back to back 300 the same time i got my first one he told me he likes that ball also

I enjoyed this bowling ball because I bowl with power, however, sometimes I would like my ball to go further down the lane (hold longer) then turn with some energy. This ball was great my only 2 sessions with it.

This ball is fantastic! My house puts out a large amount of oil and so I end up needing a stronger ball to play the higher scoring part of the lane. Lay down 21-22, arrows about 15.5-16 to 5-6 down lane. This ball allows me to play there and gives me plenty of miss room. My average is up 13 pins after 3 weeks and rising! I drilled mine 4¼×4×5½ 2LS. I drilled the holes 1¾" deep. And i always apply truCut 1000grit before league It's a strong layout for this ball and definitely something that I can't bring everywhere but for this condition is exactly right! Very pleased with this one!
