Performance Analysis

Performance Analysis

Testing revealed the Roto Grip Clone delivers a smooth, predictable ball motion characterized by earlier roll-down due to its asymmetric core design. On a fresh house shot, independent reviewers observed a clean, consistent arc between the 10 and 12 board area—typical midlane movement for a reactive solid coverstock in medium-heavy conditions. The shiny Reactor Gloss surface (finished to 1000-grit then stepped down with compound and light 3000-pad hand scuff) produced minimal skid through the front end, allowing the core to assert itself early and transition smoothly into the lane. This predictability proved valuable for understanding the ball’s motion shape, though carry decreased noticeably when testers moved deeper into the oil, accompanied by increased deflection off the pocket.

Where the Clone showed its limitations was in raw hitting power and overall versatility across different player styles. As testers moved the ball to tighter angles, the earlier roll characteristics meant less angular velocity into the pins—the ball “stopped” rather than wheeled through the pocket, even when thrown with reduced ball speed. While the motion remained consistent and understandable, reviewers noted this trade-off may not satisfy bowlers seeking stronger backend reaction or more pronounced pin action from a midlane control slot. The ball’s performance suggested it occupies a middle ground: reliable and forgiving, but without the aggressive response some medium-heavy oil bowlers expect from premium equipment at this price point.

Who Is This Ball For?

The Clone suits bowlers who prioritize consistency and predictability over maximum hitting power—particularly those with moderate rev rates or smoother release styles who benefit from earlier core engagement. Bowlers working fresh, medium-heavy house shots and looking for a forgiving midlane option will find the ball’s smooth motion easy to read and adjust around. It works especially well for players who prefer moving boards incrementally to chase changes rather than relying on sharp angular transitions.

This ball may disappoint players expecting premium backend aggression or those seeking a clear “must-have” addition to their arsenal. Bowlers with higher rev rates or aggressive release styles may find the early roll cuts into the angular velocity they need at the breakpoint. The Clone represents a solid, dependable choice for everyday league play in medium-heavy conditions, but bowlers considering it should be honest about whether they need more punch from this slot before committing.

Bowlers Say

Bowlers say the Clone delivers strong midlane motion with surprising length thanks to its polished solid coverstock, making it effective on medium to heavy oil conditions. Many compare it favorably to the UFO Alert, noting cleaner fronts and angular backend reaction with excellent pin carry, though some find it too over/under with factory finish until surface adjustments are made.

Ball Review (Dynamo X & Clone): The Tour Dynam-X will be a staple in the bag for some time to come. In this review I bowled on a very light THS that had some recreational play on it prior to me bowling. I drilled 2 Dynam-X balls as I was a big fan of the Rubicon which features a modified core in the Dynam-X. With the high friction/early hook conditions I encountered the pin down provided the best look of the 2 as it blended out the pattern real well. As you will see in the video with the pin up I begin to loft the ball a bit to get the ball to clear the fronts and provide energy down lane. I believe the Tour Dynam-X will be a great benchmark ball to throw on medium to higher volume and will be good with surface adjustments. I saw real good continuation with the pin down as that ball matched up the best, provided plenty of margin and great hitting power through the pins. With the Clone given the strength of this asym and the environment I was bowling on it was way too strong for those conditions. I winded up moving right from the Dynam-X and increased my ball speed to get it through the fronts and provide angle down lane. You will see on the first few shots when I play left to right it read too early and didn't provide enough shape down lane. Once I got right and increased speed the ball looked real good. This will be good for medium to heavier conditions and could be used either on the fresh or as a transition ball off the stronger solids.

It is featuring the Cloned ET core which is like the original ET core but has been modified to get a lower RG and a higher diff. With the Clone I found is a ball that is really clean due to the Reacta Gloss. The new coverstock is also a balance of a clean but round shape. With the core you are getting a early rolling core with continuous motion. This ball will be a good step down from a gem but is still a longer reaction compared to an exotic gem. This will be good out of box with higher rev bowlers but will adjust very well with surface to fit a variety of styles. Get yours 8/18 at your local Storm VIP pro shop. Layout: 5 x 4.5 x 4.5 Surface: Reacta Gloss The new Clone features the enhanced Cloned ET Core which lowered the RG Value and increased the differential compared to the ET Core of the UFO and Alert. This creates a stronger foot print in the oil for heavier oil conditions. There is also a new coverstock on this one with the Optitrax Solid. The finishing process is also Reacta Gloss which is completely new for a solid coverstock since the Eternal Cell many years ago. What makes this finishing process great is that it gives a cleaner look on the lane while giving a more angular and continuous backend than if it were a dull finish. This surface alone will give this ball more usability across more different lane conditions. I was able to test this on a typical house pattern and the 38ft Kegel Alcatraz Pattern. On the house pattern, I found this ball to be cleaner through the front and more angular down lane. The solid coverstock allowed me to still see good continuation and control on the lane good enough for the fresh. The reacta gloss did give it a little more length in the oil at times and did leave a weak 10 pin. When I got this ball to the friction, it read the lane very well and had a lot of hitting power through the pins. Compared to a Gem, the Clone is definitely cleaner and more down lane motion. Knocking the reacta gloss off this ball will bring it a lot closer to the Gem while still being overall cleaner. On the Alcatraz pattern, I found the reacta gloss finish to give me too much length to have success on the fresh. It often finished a little too behind the head pin and was a little too strong if I went more direct up the lane. As the lanes transitioned and gave me more hook to the outside part of the lane, this ball really started to shine. It still gave me easy length but angled more harder than on the fresh. It went through the pins significantly better. As the lanes continued to transition and I moved more left with my feet, the ball reaction still stay strong. It continued to angle through the pins while also controlling the flatter part of the pattern. This reaction is a great thing for my style because it still controls the lane while giving more length and continuation. On medium to medium long patterns, this ball will be in my bag as it is perfect for them. Heavier oiled patterns, would need some extra surface to get it to slow down a little quicker, especially on the fresh. I can also see myself having two of these in the bag, one being shiny and the other dull. Compared to the UFO alert, the stronger solid cover of the Clone makes it earlier and smoother. They can easily play off of each other well if the surfaces are both similar. Adam Chase Storm Staff

Clone - Ball Specs Cover Stock: OptiTrax Solid Reactive Finish: Reacta Gloss Core: Cloned E.T. Core Color: Alien/Deep Mist/Cyber Grape RG: 2.51 Differential: 0. the 056 Intermediate Diff: 0.016 Review The Roto Grip high performance Clone has the reimagined Equalizer Technology Core, which changed the core’s density by lowering the RG value and increasing the Differential value and wrapped with the OptiTrax Solid Reactive cover stock. The Clone is cleaner than the UFO Alert stands with a very strong finish on the backend and great striking power. I tested this ball on a 40 feet typical house pattern with no issues playing right of the track area and standing left of 25. As a low to medium rev player this ball will be great on house patterns and medium oil tournament patterns. This is a great ball for all levels of bowlers.
