Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive Review
Heavy oil flagship of the Roto Grip lineup. Maximum lane traction for flooded conditions at $174.95. Video reviews inside.
it looks good ah I see they been drilled that's good good to see all the rst hyperdrives ready okay so we're going to do some testing today got a couple patterns for you house shot and something's more sporty going to throw some shots get some action going See How They Roll for you and then get your feedback how's that sound okay sweet okay Nicole you're up first please step up tell us where you're standing where you're looking what's going on so since we're starting on a house shot
normally I'd stand about 20 but I'm going to move 25 and throw in between second and third Arrow somewhere around [Music] [Music]
well that was great four for four yeah that's awesome yeah uh what's your layout I did 4X 5 by two so pin up pin up now did you you're drilling balls now for yourself did you choose that layout or did you find it laying around and just put it on your bowl consulted my trust dad on the layout for that one all right so pin up why did he choose pin up for you did he tell you why he gave you that layout well so the XEL is one of my favorite balls and I know this one's supposed to be a little stronger and i'
love pin up on all all my equipment so this one's a little bit different than my XL so I could throw this before so it's a good compliment layout all right Steve you're up next okay can you top four for four or at least it uh four for four is pretty tough before it's pretty impressive she set the bar high but I'll do my best okay so uh what's your strategy then shot I can say on a house shot usually I'm probably going to be about maybe four or five left of where Nicole's at typically um and I do know
that this is a pretty strong ball right picks up a lot it's going to give me some shape down Lane I know too so I'm probably going to cheat it a couple more so I'm going to start like probably 26 or so with my feet and I do drift left as well too so I'm going to slide probably around 30 [Music]
[Music] four for four it's flush man I like see so now your layout is something I don't usually see on your balls too much unless it's a very specific type of ball why did you choose that layout that's true well you know some of the uh
asymmetrical I'll go with a Pinn down layout just because I don't need to uh add to the asymmetry of it so it kind of actually takes a lot of times I'll uh when it comes to a a heavier oil type of a ball I'm not trying to cover quite as many boards either so it seems to match up a little bit better with my launch angle and my rev rate and my game just in general so what is the layout for me for me this is a this is a 5x 4x4 so the pin's basically right below my ring
finger and it uh again it flares plenty but it doesn't make me or force me to either be too open or kind of in an uncomfortable spot mhm m m keeping the diff a little you're not adding to a little bit more in check if I go with a a real short pin buffer if it's on a ball like this the spacing on the flare Rings gets real wide and then a lot of times I actually will lose a little bit of back end reaction too so okay it it just doesn't really match for my game okay all right Steve good job good work
yanic please all right take stand my turn and uh this ball looks great what do you think of the colors so far beautiful orange is my favorite color mixed with uh I'm color blind so blue and pink blue and pink you are correct sir all I know is it looks really good and bright so I'm excited to see what this ball does all right where are you standing where are you looking I'm going to try to stand at 30 I feel like that would put me in a spot is kind of what I would do on a house shot this seemed to
be a bigger ball so making sure that I get it right to recover okay in the oil a little further left than Steve and Nicole [Music] [Music]
right that was a lot of back end such a ball I agree so now you did something similar to Steve with pin down what's the numbers on yours that's a 5 by 3 and 1/2 by 4 and a quar do you do pin down a lot um I don't actually unless and the reason why I have another ball that I really like a big Asim pin down and that's the one I use the most out of all um for example like the ion Max or just bigger Asim to me tend to be too much or not controllable so I feel like I wanted to try pin down on this to keep it just
a little bit more smooth and controllable and I can use it more and I have for way eyebow I feel like I have more options with hiin on layout so and it seem to be working pretty good so far yeah it does retain more energy than I thought it would for such a like a big cover it just looks like it's going to hook yeah so uh awesome let's throw some more shots Nicole the lanes are probably transitioned a little bit by now make sure you make a move time to move what's your best guesstimate on the Move well
for funsies I I'm going to just jump left a lot jump left yeah I'm just going to cuz I think this ball can handle it it's pretty strong okay so yeah we're going to jump stand left throw right [Music] [Music]
[Music] well uh I think I speak for Steve Anan it we're all impressed yeah that ball handled that entry angle like perfectly yeah my money's on you so uh What uh do you think of what do those do colors matter in the selection process for like your top tier balls your favorite balls
does color matter color doesn't matter to me but it's reminds me of like the gem and how bright it was it's so neon so it's always fun to throw yeah I love it it stands out and you can definitely see it turn up and turn the corner when it wants to yeah for sure go left all right Steve what do you think well I mean I can tell you as of right now from where I was at before I've got uh some more play on the lane we got yanuk who's inside of me as well too which normally means you're going to have to factor in
that as well going across where I was playing so I'm probably going to move maybe not as much as Nicole she jump way left but I'm going to move left two or three and then still try to get it to the right so it creates some you know get get it to where that friction is and then see if and how it comes off that spot okay are you going to do anything different with your hand or just kind of keep the same position and just move your feet typically as I move in I need to try to get my hand a little bit more around it to get a little B more AIS rotation and uh when you're bowling good
you don't have to think too much but we'll give it a shot see what happens [Music] [Music]
so I can see what you mean uh on the rotation now this one's unique and I'm still curious about it it's a big cover but with a higher RG core yeah so the asm's of all the lines of all the Asim that we're making right now it has the highest RG why is such a big cover on and what matches why does it match up so well well I think what you need is you need a big cover as far as being able to handle the oil or the amount of oil you're trying to bowl on so it also has 2,000 grit surface it's also a solid
right it's got micro tracks so we've got all this texture and stuff on the outside of the ball that makes it want to kind of cut through the oil a little bit but we've got plenty of low RG parts that end up losing axis rotation rolling more forward in the mid lane so now we've got something that retains the axis rotation a little bit better with a big cover mhm so it helps give you that differentiation and shape and ball motion when you're trying to build an Arsenal you need stuff that's different y it's going to stay on just enough longer to tip just that much harder on
the back looks great yeah all right see I'm going to make another move these guys are four for four again again yeah so I'm going to make another move and hearing Steve say that with uh the higher RG uh core in here that I could move a little bit more left um so I'm going to make a a 5bo move left after that and get a little bit slower and softer more around it but also move my eyes in just to make sure that I don't throw it too far out the where it has to recover too much and just keep it a
little bit more in the oil so I'm going to move a 5 and three left [Music] [Music]
perfect that look great does it remind you of anything is there anything else that rolls similarly to it I don't think so for me not really because usually these bigger balls when I move this far left I can't get them to recover this to turn and even on a house shot especially here where they're hooks so much I could not really throw any of these bigger ASM balls on a pattern like this I feel like it picks up enough like the cover is big enough to pick up but still have that back end and I for me I feel like this is a pretty Unique Piece especially with
the layout that I L like that okay well awesome job awesome job awesome job I'm going to oil the lanes with something more sporty it's probably going to force you into a complete zone change okay going to maybe see a little different uh look different reaction all right guys something a little heavier something a little tighter down Lane especially uh last year's open championships singles doubles pattern okay okay so if you bold on it you know what to do Nicole you're
up first please what's your move uh well I was going to ask you because I'm not very familiar with sports shops okay so where do you think what zone of the lane sh you moved way left last time let's move way right this time way right yeah you're probably going to want to move up on the approach a little bit and slow the ball Ste yeah down just a little bit [Music]
[Music] perfect so what's the official board count how many did you move right gosh I don't know that's so many 5 10 15 about 15 so a complete zone change yeah totally different did you do anything different with your hand like try and stay more up the back and yeah so like you said I stood further up on the
approach so I would slow down and I was just really really like straight in front of me pretty soft so I could give the ball time to hook back into the pocket but thank God for that AI Core cuz some of those were not very flush and They Carried perfect yeah those little three quter pocket hits that's where it really comes into play great looks good who's next Steve please okay up to bat well I did have a little bit of the ability to see what kind of adjustments Nicole had to make right so
I know that I'm going to have to get my feet to the right so now it's a matter of trying to guess how much and then if I'm going to have to make any changes with my hand but I'm going to try and move I'm going probably going to start with about 7 or eight to the right get my feet a little bit right of the Big Dot as they say Big Dot and I'm going to try to keep it a little bit softer and try to roll it a little bit more rather than let my hand get quite arounded as much [Music]
yeah you know what [Music] [Music] woo beautiful beautiful beautiful so of all the bag all the balls in your bag
right now does that fit between any two specific ones well you know that's a good question a lot of times you know I'll use for example the attention star when I want something that I'm going to be playing a little bit more off the left gutter because it's cleaner has a later break point uh but then if we're also looking at something that's going to pick up a little bit quicker something that's going to roll a little bit more uh in the rotor grip line the S2 does that so for me this fits right in between that because it doesn't roll as
early and doesn't roll as forward in the mid lane as what the S2 does uh but it's definitely not a clean you know skid through the dry heads kind of a ball because the cover is so strong yeah it cover is very very strong yeah those bright colors we know pretty strong uh reminds you of the gem almost it does yeah in the gem which was super super great ball on a lot of different conditions variety of different Bowlers Styles length of patterns worked great um and they're I mean they're just a
that's a legendary ball in the road to grip line sure is y yic yes sir please all righty so I bought the open championships last year for the first time and on the D singles and doubles pattern I did use urane so I'm going to make a guess and make my regular move from urane to reactive which would be 5 in1 left which means I'll probably be prettyy close to the gutter so let's see what that looks like very close to the
[Music] gutter good [Music] you weren't kidding couple of those
right off the one board I didn't think it was going to see it like that that was awesome uh do you think that the pin down helps it stay on line a little bit longer so you can play that tighter shot I think so the just having the pin down layout I feel like it gives me the confidence that I'm able to play angles like this and it will be able to just stay on line there rather than wanting to jump left with pin up layout and just being able to know that move and trusting it to the right like I said on
this pattern where I used urane I feel like I knew that the ball was going to be able to recover from that break point I see I see Nicole please now the lanes have started transition we've got a whole game Bol on it yes that doesn't take long for you to see some Lane start to go away what do you think the move is going to be well usually for me when I'm playing sport shots it gets pretty tight so I don't think I'm going to make a big move I'm just going to move two with my feet left and one with my see if that works yeah not a whole zone change yeah
just very slight and keep it in front of me [Music]
well a lot of uh mixture hits good to see that's what we want to see we want to see some forgiveness down Lane um how about you where does that ball fit in your bag does it fit any next to anything is it the top it's probably what I would throw somewhere before or after my EXO it's like somewhere around there I think what do you think well yeah stronger cover more Nano based the XL not nano based right uh should be a little cleaner than the XL so uh the XL should
be cleaner than that one with with a nano added into this one so yeah I it'll be perfect for me yeah yic what do you think we got Steve first yeah we got Steve first Can't Forget About Steve let's go Steve let's go Steve come on forgot the order too many strikes come on Steve way too many strikes to count all right all right so now that it's transitioned and it's uh game what two you think where do you think you're going to be at with your feet and your eyes well where I was at
before um and I was crossing about oh maybe two or so inside with just a little bit more angle than where Nicole was so I'm going to go ahead and move my feet another two or three to the left of that and again kind of still try to throw it to that same break point so it's going to start to be a little bit more rotation with the hand um so I'm going to get I'm probably going to be 21 22 here or so with my feet and uh accounting for the drift I should be sliding right around 26ish or so
[Music] perfect such a pro such a pro makes it
look well the thing I like about it is that a lot of times once you start to get all those shots of the ball going down the lane is you got to change balls and sometimes you got to change balls right away but for me I'm still seeing that shape down Lane as I'm moving my feet inside so as long as I still see the shape down Lane I have a tendency of being able to stick with that ball until I start to lose it and then I may ball down to a say an attention star when it gets to that point but right now I'm still seeing it so I'm I feel very comfortable yeah it's not forcing you
into whole another not forcing me into changing ball yeah that's a good sign it's a very good sign yeah all right are you done are you can can Yan bow now it's very impressive to watch but I want to see some variety so since this is a little bit tougher pattern than a house shot uh my favorite move is usually moving my ice more in than moving my feet in ice to just not throw it too far out so I'm going to make a two left with my feet but a three with my eyes just to keep it
a little bit closer and use some of that carry down I guess you know from them buing on this pattern and being two games in so I'm going to be about 20 and about six of the arrows [Music]
heyim you have S2 right I do where is it compared to that one I would definitely think that this ball I would throw before the S2 and then ball down to the S2 like Steve said when I have to move a little bit left and after that I would go to my attention star the original attention star is one of my favorite balls I love that ball every time I have to go to there I know I can trust it so having this progression out of these three balls in the rotor grip lineup I think just makes sense MH and uh I feel like this one just does what I've been
looking for where it's not too big not too uncontrollable and I still am able to see the recovery backand right so I'm excited to try this one and I think I'm bringing it to league tonight you got to go well you heard it here folks uh three of the best Bowlers in the building showing you what the rst hyperdrive can do for you so go to your local storm VIP Pro Shop today and check it out thanks for watching watch you [Applause] [Music]
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Roto Grip RST Hyperdrive delivers a notably strong coverstock with excellent continuation through the backend—a defining characteristic that separates it from other balls in its category. When tested on a house shot pattern, the ball demonstrated cleaner motion down the lane compared to similarly strong equipment, with testers noting it maintains energy and creates noticeable pop in the midlane rather than burning up early. This extended drive phase proved especially forgiving on miss-in shots, where the ball’s recovery ability allowed it to still reach the pocket. The reactive solid coverstock pairs well with the asymmetric core to create a smooth but dynamic motion that handles friction effectively without becoming sluggish.
Positional testing across the lane showed the Hyperdrive performs most predictably when played further right and rotated with axis rotation, while mid-lane play revealed the ball prefers some angle to work through the oil pattern. Independent reviewers observed that when moved to straighter angles, the ball’s earlier read in the front made it less versatile. In direct comparison to stronger equipment in the market, the Hyperdrive positioned itself as a middle-ground option—more dynamic and continuous down the lane than the Ion Max, yet cleaner and more manageable than some of the tour-proven heavy hitters. The medium-heavy oil rating held true across testing, confirming this is legitimate equipment for medium-heavy conditions rather than a ball trying to do too much across multiple conditions.
Who Is This Ball For?
The RST Hyperdrive is built for bowlers who have graduated beyond entry-level reactive equipment but aren’t yet ready to commit exclusively to extreme backends. Intermediate to advanced bowlers with moderate-to-higher rev rates will find this ball most rewarding, particularly those who struggle with balls that read the lane too early or lack continuation when they need it. At $174.95, it offers solid value for someone building a two-ball or three-ball arsenal and needing something that covers boards effectively without being the most aggressive option available.
This is also a smart choice for bowlers preparing for conditions they expect to see on league night or tournament patterns—medium to heavy oil—where they want equipment that rewards good fundamentals with predictable angular motion and pocket hits. The Hyperdrive is less ideal for bowlers with lower rev rates who need earlier reading balls, or for those primarily rolling on dry to medium conditions where this ball’s coverstock would overreact. Conversely, if you already own a strong asymmetric ball like the Ion Max, the Hyperdrive fills the role of a slightly cleaner alternative rather than a necessary upgrade.
The Pros
- • RST + AI core is Roto Grip's most powerful asymmetric — .055 differential with .017 intermediate diff creates massive flare
- • MicroTrax Solid at 2000 grit provides aggressive midlane traction that handles fresh heavy oil with ease
- • 6.5 length rating means it picks up the lane early — ideal for bowlers who need the ball to read the pattern quickly
- • Strong pin action at 9.0 — the asymmetric core drives through the pins with authority
The Cons
- • Too aggressive for medium conditions without surface polish — this ball is built for oil
- • Solid coverstock requires regular surface maintenance to keep the reaction consistent
- • Early-reading motion limits use on broken-down lanes or lighter patterns

Bowlers Say
Bowlers praise the RST Hyperdrive as an excellent heavy oil benchmark ball, combining the RST+AI core with MicroTrax coverstock for strong midlane read and continuous backend motion. Most appreciate its versatility on fresh patterns and ability to handle higher oil volumes while maintaining energy through the pins. Some note it may be too strong for typical house shots without surface adjustments.

With nationals coming up I was waiting for the next "big" ball to come out and here it is. After shooting 300 at nationals with the Gem a few years ago I tend to always want that shape in my bag on the big stage. Here it is, this ball is almost identical to the Gem in the way it rolls except it seems slightly more continuous through the pins. EVEN BETTER!

The powerful Microtrax cover that was featured on the Gem is teamed up with Roto Star core that was featured on the previous RST releases, this time upgraded with the Amplified Inertia (A.I) technology. This combination should give you a stronger midlane read than the previous RST balls but more down-lane hook than the Gem. I tested the RST Hyperdrive for the first time in league. Our house pattern is 44 feet long and high volume so this seemed like the perfect spot to throw it. The first few shots did want to pick up right away, which wasn't too surprising with how much our front panels hook. I bumped a little left to find the pocket, but the ball was pretty flat going through the pins. I had trouble getting the ball far enough right and when moved left enough to get it there, it didn't retain much energy. The adjustment I've found that works best when I see this ball reaction is to throw the ball a little bit further out on the lane, to take the early friction out of play. This worked very well with the RST Hyperdrive as long as I got it into the friction to the right early enough. If I got the ball more in the track around 7-8 it had a chance to strike but it showed noticeably less energy going through the pins compared to if I got the ball out more in the 4-5 board range. If I made sure to catch the fingers well, I could strike pretty consistently in this range of boards down-lane. I think this ball will be pretty popular for people who are a little more speed dominant or those bowling on heavier oil patterns. It does have a reasonable long transition when it starts to hook but that was also partly due to my choice of layout. In a house with quicker back-ends but the same oil up front I think it would look fantastic. It definitely falls in between a Gem and the RST in terms of reaction and shape. The Hyperdrive is definitely the ball I have been looking for on Wednesday nights, it gives me the little extra grip that I was missing before. The RST core design, A.I. technology and the MicroTrax coverstock definitely makes this ball a monster. It also keeps the strong motion downlane where most fall off. I am also really looking forward on having this ball for some tournaments where the patterns might be longer and more volume.
The Roto Grip RST Hyper Drive is a powerhouse for bowlers seeking strong mid-lane read with a controlled yet aggressive backend motion. Featuring the RST + A.I. Core and the MicroTrax Solid Coverstock, this ball blends the best of both worlds—strong traction in oil while retaining energy for a dynamic finish. Out of the box at 2000-grit Abralon, it handles medium to heavy oil conditions exceptionally well, providing a smooth yet continuous motion without being overly sharp. Compared to the original RST X-1 and X-2, the Hyper Drive offers a slightly earlier roll with a more predictable backend, making it ideal for players who want consistency without sacrificing hitting power. Whether you're a high-rev player looking for control or a straighter player needing extra motion, the RST Hyper Drive delivers a well-balanced reaction that excels in transition.
