The 900 Global Portal gives me a really strong and dependable look when I need something that reads the lane without being overly aggressive off the spot. It picks up nicely in the midlane and gives me a smooth, continuous motion through the pins that makes it easy to control the pocket. Compared to the Ion Pro Solid, the Portal gives me a little more overall strength and shape while still maintaining that predictable, controllable feel. Compared to the Next Factor, I see the Portal as the smoother and more rounded option, especially when I don't want the ball to be too responsive downlane. It gives me a great blend of strength, control, and continuation, and I can see the Portal being a really useful benchmark-type piece in my bag on a wide variety of conditions.
Alright 900 Global fans, if you want a ball that will make your jaw drop it is definitely the Portal. I drilled mine up last Friday right before I was going to sub for a friend in a house that has a ton of friction to the outside and a big tournament that has always been known to be very dry on Sunday. Lets just say this ball was moving like crazy on the backend in practice on Friday night so I started with a different ball but after about 5 fames and not liking the look I said what the heck, grabbed the Portal and I didn’t take the ball off the ball return until I was done. I was able to play straight up 10 and was able to move in a bit and the ball didn’t quit on the backend. Now Sunday was a totally different story, practice I haven’t seen that many shots clip 3 off the right. I didn’t even try the ball in practice and went to a 1000 Grit Wicked Gremlin for the first half of game 1. At this point I just wanted to see what this ball would do and played 1 shot up 10 and left a 7 pin. I moved left and was rolling 15 at the arrows to about 10 and the ball just started striking. I was able to finish game 1 with a 192 with the Portal and then each game we moved right I was able to throw 11 strikes for a 266 game 2 then went 217 and 259 for one of my highest sets in years in this tournament at 934. For games 3 and 4 I only had to move about 2 to 3 boards left and the ball didn’t quit. This ball made me look good even on bad shots. It will be in my bag for league this week.
