Columbia 300 Piranha Solid Review

The Piranha line wouldn't be complete without the return of a true legend, the Orange Piranha. This throwback brings the iconic bright orange back to the lanes, so everyone within 20 lanes knows exactly what you're throwing. It's a nod to the early9s when the Piranha didn't just show up, it dominated. The new orange piranha features a nonHK22 cover stock. The same formula recently seen on the Red Pulse. Finished at 1500 grit, it delivers a smooth, confident
motion on medium to heavy oil patterns. By removing the power core nugget from the Piranha Core, the RG is increased and [music] the differential is lowered, allowing the ball to travel farther down the lane before making a controlled continuous move to the pocket. When compared to the red pulse, bowlers will see slightly more length and more overall hook from the orange piranha, creating a shape that's clean, predictable, and powerful through the pins. This isn't just a color throwback. It's a modern update to one of the most
recognizable names in bowling history. The legend is back. Orange Piranha. Colia 300 m bowls the world over.
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Columbia 300 Piranha Solid to be a controlled, predictable ball best suited for straighter angle play on medium-heavy oil patterns. On the house shot test pattern (43 feet with heavy volume in the middle), the ball demonstrated smooth, moderately aggressive motion with good pin carry when thrown at appropriate speed and angle. Independent reviewers observed that the ball’s symmetric core and non-HK reactive solid coverstock produced reliable backend reaction without excessive hook potential—motion characteristic of its 0.043 differential and medium RG specs. The ball responded well from the first zone (approximately 15 boards), where it generated consistent pocket hits with solid pin mixing action, and maintained carry through various shot attempts on the pattern.
When testing transitioned to steeper angles (25+ boards), the testers noted the ball became more demanding, requiring precise speed and launch angle control to generate optimal hook. The non-HK coverstock’s smoother characteristics meant the ball preferred to play a more direct line rather than aggressive, wide-angle approaches. At aggressive angles with reduced speed, the ball exhibited some skid-and-push characteristics, indicating it wasn’t designed for playing deep inside angles or creating dramatic late-lane motion. Surface adjustments or speed manipulation could alter behavior, but testing showed the ball performed most naturally when thrown with higher velocity on straighter lines, where its backend bite created effective pin action without requiring trajectory correction.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Piranha Solid is ideally suited for bowlers who prefer controlled, predictable motion on medium-heavy oil conditions and excel at playing straighter angles. This includes league bowlers comfortable with symmetric-core ball dynamics, players coming back to the sport who appreciate classic ball design and characteristics, and those seeking a no-frills workhorse that doesn’t demand elaborate angle adjustments. At $159.95, it represents solid value for intermediate to advanced bowlers looking to add a medium-heavy oil option without premium pricing.
This ball is not the right choice for bowlers who regularly play steep angles, favor aggressive asymmetric motion, or struggle with speed control. Likewise, it’s better suited for higher-rev and higher-speed players; those with moderate revolutions looking for dramatic hook may find this ball too smooth to create the angular motion they need. The Piranha Solid excels when thrown hard and straight—bowlers should honestly assess whether that matches their natural delivery style before committing.
The Pros
- • Return of iconic Piranha line with modern HyperFlex technology
- • Strong pin action and carry for a mid-performance ball
- • Excellent value at $159.95 price point
The Cons
- • Limited color options — only orange available
- • May struggle on truly heavy oil conditions

Bought this ball before hearing of Columbia’s demise. Very happy with the ball and am considering buying another before they are gone.
Iowa, United States
Well, Columbia has brought back the original Piranha. They modified the original symmetric Piranha core by raising the RG and decreasing the differential. The new Piranha has a NON HK-22 base vibrant orange Hyper Flex cover, the same coverstock used on the remake Pulse. Box surface is 1500 Siaair. I drilled one with my favorite pin down layout, 60 x 5 x 70. I shot the video on fresh"ish" THS at box surface. To my eye and memory, the motion on the new Piranha is NOT the same as the original one. My recollection of the original Piranha was that it was very clean and quicker in its down lane response. This remake Piranha is different in that it is much slower in response and offers a very early and smooth ball motion. That would be consistent with stated manufacturer intent. I tried it during a group practice session on fresh THS. I definitely noticed if I tried, when the pattern was fresher, to go away with the ball too much, the ball would not carry the corners. I did find however, if I straightened out launch angles and backed my hand out, the Pirahna rolled very predictably and went through the pins very hard. After about 20 games, I had to get way in and open up. Even with the burn spot and trying to use as much rotation as I could, the Piranha still showed a slower response and was still able to trip a 10 pin. In the end, I believe this ball will be very useful just not in the way I would have expected. I believe this ball will be in play on fresh patterns with higher volumes on a variety of distances. I also believe that the Piranha will excel with straighter launch angles and keeping the ball more in front of the bowler. I believe a variety of bowler styles will find success with the Piranha. I am looking forward to drilling a 2nd one with a quicker response layout and also experimenting with surface alterations. The Columbia Piranha is now readily available. While it is indeed sad to see the Columbia brand being retired, you still have a chance to throw the last release from Columbia. See your local pro shop for more information.
Great Bench mark Ball to my 3 bag arsenal, Sharp and aggressive. Remind me of my Venom Shock I got 6 years ago. Goodbye Columbia its been a honor to have this Ball.
