Columbia 300 Ricochet Return Review
The Ricochet Return delivers symmetric simplicity with asymmetric-level power — .054 diff hybrid for medium-heavy oil at $189.95. Video reviews inside.
Oh boy, got back. That's the return of the ricochet. I feel like it's all right. CEO Ronald Hitler from Creating the Difference. Today we're going to talk about the brand new Ricochet return. This ball features HK22C Micrlex hybrid. Has the ricochet core shape at symmetrical. The RG is 2.488. The differential is 0.054. It's symmetrical, so there is no mass bias. This ball's finished with Crown Factory polish. The hardness is 74 and it's scanned right at
5500 grit. The absorption rate is medium on this bowling ball. The layout is 16 by 4 and a half by 30. And we're going to see what the return is about right now. White and a light blue. Interesting color choice. Let's see how it rolls. Oh boy. First shot doesn't count. I mean, that wasn't a great shot, but
do me a favor. Let me know what your favorite color combination is. That is two color. Drop a comment right now. Let me know. Also, if you like our shirt, let us know. You can go to our website and pick this up. Uh, if you got some shirt ideas, let us know. If we've used your shirt idea, we may uh send you a shirt for free for helping us out come up with creative shirt designs. Come on, Ricochet. Come on. Yeah. I don't know about this one, bro.
Come on. Come on. Hook. I feel like it wants to be angular, but it's too clean. It's very clean. So, what I mean by that is it's going to go longer. Uh, it has a chance has a tendency maybe to over push. Um, if you miss end, I missed in there by one board. It's fine. Uh, if I miss left, it's probably not coming back. Let's throw a few more shots. Let's do a few more shots. I got three
colored pins in the rack. If I get the uh one 710, we'll do something special and unique for you guys. That'll strike. Yeah, it'll strike. Um, it's too clean. I'm not going to have a lot of room for error. I am. It's not a bad ball. I'm not saying it's a bad ball. We're going to move into the friction to see if that helps. But I feel like this ball is going to be kind of condition specific, more so than some of the other balls.
Make a little adjustment off of that. Should be fine. We are not going to move all the way right and try to slow hook it. That'll get there. So, watch that ball go through the pins. It's going to go over the eight pin spot, which is really the tellt tell sign that you don't you're not creating enough angle. It also is a real big indicator that you're getting ready to leave a flat seven pin, by the way, for me or a flat 10 pin. Get back into the friction or back right hook. Let's cut the lights on and see how it
rolls with the lights on. Oh boy, got back. That's the return of the ricochet. I feel like it's all right. You know what I mean? Like I feel like depending on your style of play, you may find some versatility in using this ball. Uh but this ball is definitely meant to be clean through the front and clean through the mid lane. It also feels like I might be getting a little bit more
performance out of it down lane, but definitely it's clean. This ball's clean, huh? Okay. Okay. We need more shots. H interesting. N by two. Okay. So, it was in by two and it hooked to more like it's supposed to. That's a
good sign. That's a good sign. And I say it's a good sign because it was in more oil. Balls that are too clean would have pushed and I would have struck and that ball didn't do that. So, it appears that maybe maybe it's getting a little bit more aggressive as I use it. That's a good sign. Let's see if that does. Yeah. So, that was the that was the two more back left and it was 10 back. So, I can work with that. I can work with that. Uh definitely seems to be getting a little stronger as he's getting used a little bit.
10 back. I just repeated the same shot. Um, so yeah. Okay. Can't judge a book by its cover too fast. Crown Factory Polish uh tends to be very clean. Tends to be very smooth. This ball kind of exhibited that character on the front side. As I'm bowling with it some more, it seems like it's getting a little stronger. That one's in by one. We're going to crack the surface of this bowling ball. What that means is I'm going to get the Crown Factory polish
off this ball, but not make it so dull that it's like really dull. True Cut 4000 grit sanding pad to do that. Conditioner. So, I'm literally just going to knock the polish off, but keep the bowling ball still at a high shine so it won't go quite to 4,000 grit. All right, flip it over. Conditioner again. If you're not using True Cut conditioner, something to note, it doesn't leave a mess. Uh it will double
the life of the sanding pad and you'll get a more consistent cut. So, if you're not using conditioner with your sanding pads, you should. This ball now has the Crown Factory polish knocked off of it. Let's see what it does now. First shot does not count. Flat 7 pin headpin 7 pin. Not headpin, seven pin, 10 pin, but we have the headpin and the seven pin. So, if I strike, we'll give you 5% off. If we get the headpin, the
seven pin, and the 10 pin, it's going to be a really, really, really cool deal. But I got to strike first. That's got a chance. Go to the website. 24 hours. Use the code return 5% off the website ctdbing.com. So, this ball, it's just come alive more. That's all. it. It's now going to give me some room, more room for error, not quite as clean. Uh definitely going to give me a little bit more performance. That's what happens when you knock down the bowling ball. Uh we call it cracking the surface. It's not
really sanding it aggressively. It's just really just getting that that that polish layer off of it a little bit so you can get a little bit more of the cover stock uh coming through and you get more performance. And HK22C is their strongest, most aggressive cover. So, this kind of makes sense to me what I'm seeing. adjusting the surface can make a big difference. I think this ball you got to keep in mind that maybe you got to bowl with it for a game. You want to get some shots on it. Um cuz I did see more performance out of the ball as I used it.
That'll strike. Let's Now we cracked the surface. It's definitely stronger. Let's move all the way right and slow hook it and see what happens. There was no chance of doing this with the polish on it, but I feel like now we might have a good chance. Come back. Yes. Yeah. So, just get the right surface on this bowling ball for you and your game out of the box. Throw it for some shots, probably about a game, and then make your determination if you want to adjust the surface or not.

Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed that the Columbia 300 Ricochet Return exhibits notably clean front-end and midlane motion characteristics out of the box, courtesy of its Crown Factory polish finish. On the test pattern, the ball demonstrated a tendency to push through the front lane with minimal hook potential in its factory state, requiring bowlers to play deeper into the oil to generate the angular motion the symmetric core is designed to produce. Independent reviewers observed that this clean-through-the-fronts behavior limited room for error on drier boards, with shots missing by even one board to the right failing to recover adequately. However, as the ball was thrown repeatedly, performance noticeably improved, suggesting the HK22C Micrlex hybrid coverstock strengthens with use and lane conditioning interaction.
A significant breakthrough emerged when testers cracked the surface using a 4000-grit sanding approach, removing the polish layer while maintaining a high-shine finish. This modest surface adjustment transformed the ball’s behavior dramatically—it became substantially more aggressive downlane, providing considerably more room for error and generating the backend motion that seemed absent in the polished state. Post-surface adjustment, the ball produced clean pocket hits and demonstrated the performance capability the symmetric core and coverstock pairing promised. Testing showed that bowlers throwing the Ricochet Return should expect an adjustment period; throwing it for a full game before deciding on surface modifications is recommended, as the coverstock appears to gain strength as it breaks in.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Ricochet Return is best suited for bowlers with a good understanding of surface adjustments and the patience to dial in their equipment. This is not an out-of-box-and-go ball; it requires either bowlers willing to play it conservatively on the fresh polish or those comfortable taking a sanding pad to it immediately. Intermediate to advanced players who regularly adjust ball surfaces or work with pro shops will find this ball’s potential worth the extra effort. The medium-heavy oil spec positions it as a solid choice for league bowlers on typical house conditions who appreciate having control over their equipment’s responsiveness.
Casual bowlers or those seeking a plug-and-play option may find the Ricochet Return frustrating in its factory state. However, bowlers who throw multiple balls and want to add a versatile symmetric-core option to their arsenal—particularly those who prefer working with reactive hybrid covers and don’t mind experimenting with surface adjustments—will discover good value at the $189.95 price point once they unlock the ball’s full performance potential.
The Pros
- • High .054 differential from a symmetric core delivers strong flare and hitting power
- • Hybrid coverstock at 500 grit polish provides length with a strong move off the breakpoint
- • Symmetric core layout flexibility makes it easy to match to different styles
- • Excellent pin action — carries through the deck with authority
The Cons
- • 500 grit polish may struggle on heavy volume patterns where earlier read is needed
- • Strong backend move can become over-reactive on dry backends for speed-dominant bowlers
- • Symmetric core limits the total track flare compared to asymmetric options in this price range

A quick take on the new Columbia Ricochet Return. The Ricochet Return features the same low RG/high diff symmetrical core that was used in the original Ricochet. The Ricochet Return has a ice/sky colored HK-22 Micro Flex Hybrid coverstock finished at Factory Polish over Factory Compound. I've tried this ball on fresh THS at box surface. The layout I used is my favorite pin down layout, 60 x 5 x 70. In a nutshell, this is a quick response piece of equipment. I've been working lately to expand the "end over end" range of my release. Notwithstanding working with more forward roll, the Ricochet Return shows a quicker transition of the ball. This ball will definitely be in play on lighter volumes of oil and on burn where a quicker response bowling ball is required. This, to my eye, is definitely one of the quicker response balls in the Brands of Brunswick current line up. Plus, this ball looks really sweet going down the lane. The Columbia Ricochet Return is readily available, see your local pro shop for more information.
