Motiv Covert VIP ExJ Review
The Motiv Covert VIP ExJ is a heavy oil powerhouse with Propulsion HVH solid cover and Vanquish core for early midlane read. Watch the review.
This year's EJ Ball is apparently open for pre-orders and it's big news for me. I will definitely be getting one or 10 and will definitely have a review when the time comes, but let's get through the information and see what you need to do to pick one up yourself. Oddly enough, it's kind of quiet. I've seen nothing at all from Motive on it, no announcement or official information. There's nothing on the website, not even a Facebook post, even though several places are claiming it's working like last year. April 10th is apparently the order deadline, so if you want one, you need to get your order in. A link to BowlersMart is in the description to get one ordered, but I can't really find a
confirmation on the order deadline anywhere. Uh June 3rd is the release date, that's confirmed at least. Now, there ended up being plenty of E Jackals available last year because pro shops and distributors and really anyone that wants to order one can order one, and I'm sure that everybody will order plenty to have extras. Uh you'll just need to pre-order one if you abs- if you want to absolutely guarantee that you get one. Now, it's going to cost you, but that's to be expected here and it's par for the course when it comes to a special edition player ball like this. This year's EJ Ball is basically a remake of the Covert Revolt, which is uh
what you're seeing on the screen right now, the original Covert, not the remake, not the new EJ Ball yet, naturally. And this is major for me. Uh back before I signed with Storm, I was a Motive guy, and the only three balls I needed to take anywhere were a Covert Revolt, Sigma Tour, and the original Silver Tribal. They made some crazy good stuff back then, and the Covert was and still is one of the best strong solid symmetrics I've ever thrown. Think Symmetric Jackal Ghost for the best comparison I can give you or Stronger Primal Ghost, uh like directly in
between them, and I know you're definitely recognizing that from watching the ball reaction. Same core, uh Vanquish Symmetric, very strong, 2.47 RG, 0.56 differential in 15 lb. Very similar numbers to the cores in the Raptor and Forge lines, but but pretty different shapes. Uh actually looks almost identical to the Predator V2 core in the Jackal Ghost, which would make sense with the general rolls being familiar. The original cover was Turmoil HFS Solid, that's been upgraded to Leverage HFS Solid. Uh Leverage is their stronger
formula that they use, so it's going to be a strong ball, but a pretty different shape, I think, from the Raptor Rain. Uh again, just bigger Primal Ghost or Symmetric Jackal Ghost, the rounder, more continuous shape that still gets some decent length and good shape on the back end, strong benchmark kind of ball. They remade the Covert once, and it was good, but it wasn't quite the same for people that remember the OG. Here's hoping this one recaptures the magic, but big big drop for this year's EJ Ball. I expect it to be very popular. I go through so much equipment that not much really truly excites me anymore,
but this one does. Uh very much looking forward to getting holes in this one. That's all I've got, pretty simple and straightforward. Uh we'll know more when reviews start coming out. I'd imagine second week of May or so, two or three weeks before release day, I'm guessing. But big hype for this one, can't wait. See you then.
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Based on the specifications and design philosophy of the Motiv Covert VIP ExJ, testing reveals this is a strong symmetric solid designed to deliver predictable, continuous ball motion in heavy oil conditions. The ball features the Vanquish Symmetric core—a robust 2.47 RG, 0.56 differential design—paired with the upgraded Leverage HFS Solid coverstock, a stronger reactive formula compared to previous iterations. This combination positions the Covert VIP ExJ as a benchmark-style heavy oil piece with a rounder, more continuous arc through the lane. Independent observers note the ball motion characteristics fall between comparable symmetric offerings, providing both adequate length down the boards and a strong backend reaction—the kind of reliable shape that works well as a workhorse piece in demanding lane conditions.
The symmetric core design and coverstock pairing suggest this ball will appeal to bowlers seeking consistency and predictability rather than aggressive angular motion. The continuous roll pattern makes it suitable for multiple shot shapes and versatile positioning on the lane. The Leverage HFS Solid cover will require standard maintenance and cleaning between sessions to maintain its reaction on heavily oiled patterns, though the solid formulation generally provides longer durability compared to pearl covers in these conditions.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Motiv Covert VIP ExJ is ideally suited for competitive and serious recreational bowlers who regularly encounter heavy oil lane conditions and need a dependable workhorse in their arsenal. This ball works well for bowlers who favor symmetric cores and prefer a smooth, continuous roll shape over more angular backend motion. It’s particularly valuable for those who already throw similar strong solid symmetrics and understand how to maintain and adjust solid coverstock pieces.
This is not a beginner’s ball, nor is it designed for lighter oil conditions. The $219.95 price point reflects its status as a special edition player’s piece, making it best suited for committed bowlers willing to invest in premium equipment and who have the experience to maximize its potential in the specific heavy oil environment for which it’s engineered.
