Performance Analysis

Everything on the Jackal Ambush spec sheet pulls in the same direction: maximum traction, maximum motion. The Predator V2 asymmetric core sits at a low 2.47 RG with a .054 differential and a .015 intermediate differential, so it revs up almost immediately and flares 5-6 inches, constantly rotating fresh coverstock onto the lane. That cover is Leverage Reactive, a solid formulation, left at a dull 1000 grit from the factory. There is no polish here to buy length and no pearl to delay the read; the 4 length rating is the most honest number on the sheet, and the 9 hook rating is its reward.

Motiv’s own release material calls the Ambush a flare monster, and the brand footage with Andrew Anderson and Mike Magolan shows the design intent in motion: a heavy midlane read on fresh oil followed by a strong, continuous drive rather than a flat roll-out, which is where the 8 backend and 8 pin action ratings come from. That continuation is the trick of the low RG and big asymmetry working together; the ball starts early but keeps turning through the pins instead of using itself up in the midlane.

The 5 versatility rating is the cost of all that traction. On anything less than genuine heavy volume, a 1000 grit solid with this much core burns the fronts, loses energy, and hits soft. The cons say it plainly: on average conditions this is simply too much ball.

Who Is This Ball For?

The Ambush belongs in the bag of bowlers who actually see heavy oil regularly: demanding tournament patterns, fresh long-pattern leagues, and high-volume sport conditions. It is the ball you pull out first on a flooded fresh, when everything else in the bag is skating, and the dull solid cover plus early-revving core finds traction nothing else can. High rev rate players who need their strongest piece to still finish, rather than roll out, are the other natural match, since the design keeps energy in reserve through the pins.

Be realistic before buying one used (its discontinued status means that is now the only route). If your bowling happens on a typical house shot, this ball will read too early and too hard most nights, and a mid-range solid or hybrid will outscore it. The 9 overall rating is condition-dependent by design: on the heavy oil it was built for, the Ambush is exceptional, and away from that oil it is the wrong tool.
