foreign [Music] motivation Nick Parr here with you in Grand Rapids Michigan at Spectrum Lanes and today I'm very excited to introduce the new tank Yellow Jacket really excited about this release and this new addition to our MicroCell polymer edition of the tank line what makes this ball really unique is how early it is but it's not a urethane
covered it still reads the front part of the lane and gives you a smoother controllable motion like a urethane ball what we've done is actually wrapped a new cover it is the friction M5 MicroCell really excited about this new piece because of the new editor that we have in this MicroCell cover called Duramax that holds the surface profile of the ball longer so you're going to see that we've got three different surfaces on these balls and the one that's out of box stays out of box as long as possible it doesn't shine up now we can shine these balls because it's not urethane and we're able to manipulate the shape on the lane because
of that so like I said what we've done with these three balls is actually drill them all the same which is my normal tester layout this is 55 by five and a half by 35 but we've adjusted the surfaces on all of them the Thousand grit out of box allowed me to stay straighter and closer to the Cliff of the oil in the friction so that way I knew that if I missed in the oil I had enough cover that it was still going to dig and still go through the pins the right way whereas I went to the 3001 I moved in a little bit further left with my feet to play the friction more because it needs more friction to come off that you know at the pattern doesn't
need to be in the oil nearly as long as the Thousand grit and then you saw that especially at the 5000 grit it needs much more friction so I had to open my angles even more and get steeper into the friction the 3000 or even the 5000 they acted closer to a resin ball compared to the Thousand grid out of box comparing the purple tank to the yellow jacket I saw that the yellow jacket was much earlier up front it definitely saw the lane a little bit sooner and started to make its move much more gradually compared to the purple which was a little bit cleaner and just a little bit smoother overall [Music]

Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Motiv Tank Yellowjacket to be an exceptionally early-reading ball that bridges the gap between urethane smoothness and modern coverstock aggression. The Friction M5 MicroCell cover, enhanced with Duramax technology, distinguishes this release by maintaining its surface profile longer than traditional urethane, allowing bowlers to adjust surface preparation without losing performance consistency. Independent reviewers observed the out-of-box 1000-grit finish provided the most forgiving line, staying straighter and closer to the dry oil while still delivering strong pin action even on deeper lines. The ball’s early lane reading was particularly notable: compared directly to other balls in the Tank line, the Yellowjacket engaged the lane visibly sooner and produced a more gradual arc rather than a sharp backend motion.
Surface adjustments dramatically shaped performance characteristics across the test pattern. Moving to 3000-grit required repositioning deeper into the friction to manage the increased angular motion, while the 5000-grit finish demanded even steeper angles and longer friction play—demonstrating that this ball rewards bowlers who understand how to manipulate surface for specific oil conditions. Testing on a dry oil condition showed the Yellowjacket’s versatility: the stock surface excelled when staying outside the heaviest oil, while polished surfaces opened up more aggressive lines as friction demands increased. The gradual, controllable motion proved to be the ball’s signature characteristic across all surface preparations, distinguishing it from smoother-rolling comparisons in Motiv’s lineup.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Tank Yellowjacket is ideally suited for bowlers seeking early lane recognition without sacrificing control—a profile that works particularly well for players transitioning from pure urethane equipment or those who prefer predictable, readable motion. The ball’s forgiving out-of-box finish makes it an excellent choice for league bowlers on lighter oil patterns, while its surface-adjustment flexibility appeals to more experienced players who want a single core that can be tuned for multiple conditions. The durability advantage of the MicroCell cover means less frequent resurfacing compared to traditional options, making it practical for bowlers who prioritize consistency over time.
This ball also serves bowlers who struggle with angular, backend-heavy reactions and prefer a smoother transition through the pins. The gradual arc and early reading characteristics make it particularly valuable for bowlers with moderate ball speed or rev rates who need equipment that works with their delivery rather than demanding higher velocity to activate. Whether playing house shot leagues or drier sport patterns, the Yellowjacket’s combination of affordability, durability, and controllable motion makes it a smart choice for anyone looking for a dependable workhorse ball that doesn’t require constant adjustment.
The Pros
- • Frixion M4 solid urethane at 1000 grit provides predictable, controllable motion on dry lanes
- • Flux core with .015 differential is intentionally low-flare — the ball goes where you throw it
- • Comparison video against the Blue Tank shows how the Yellowjacket's surface creates a smoother, more controlled arc
- • Excellent for managing lane transition when reactive balls are hooking too much
The Cons
- • Limited to 14-16 lb weight options
- • Very low .015 differential means minimal hook potential — strictly a control piece
- • 3-4 inch flare potential is on the higher side for urethane, which some bowlers may find surprising

I love this Ball. It's great for Short Patterns because it doesn't over Hook. I have a Dull one and a Shiny one. I Drilled the Dull on a 4 inch pin so it can have more backend and go a little longer. I drilled the Shiny on a 2 inch pin as a weaker drilling so it can clear the heads and still have some backend. I have a Desert Tank and it it's cleaner and more backend than the Yellow Jacket. The carbide is more Hook and right in between the Desert Tank and Yellow Jacket. I heard a lot of people hate this ball but I love it but I will use it on the fresh on Short Patterns and tough patterns so it can control the backend and not over Hook.
This ball is perfect for the way I bowl. I’ve been able to increase my average and hook the ball.
