Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
The Hammer Black Pearl Urethane features the symmetrical Hammer LED Core paired with a Urethane Pearl 78D coverstock finished at 500 grit. With an RG of 2.65 and minimal differential of .015, this ball is engineered for smooth, predictable motion rather than aggressive hook. The urethane coverstock provides the controllable traction that urethane balls are known for, making it ideal for bowlers who struggle with over/under reactions from reactive resin equipment.
The ball’s performance characteristics make it particularly well-suited for dry to medium oil conditions where reactive balls might be too aggressive. The low flare potential of 1-2 inches and the symmetrical core design promote a consistent roll with minimal track flare, resulting in predictable ball motion that many bowlers find easier to control. While it won’t provide the dramatic backend reaction of modern reactive equipment, the Black Pearl Urethane excels in situations where precision and repeatability are more valuable than raw power.

Bowlers Say
Bowlers say the Black Pearl 78D is 3-4 boards weaker than the Purple Hammer with a cleaner, more predictable urethane reaction. It excels on short sport patterns and fresh lanes, allowing straighter play up the boards. Many praise its controllable motion and pin carry, making it ideal for tournament competition and PBA-compliant urethane needs.

As a PBA member, I anxiously awaited this ball. I throw 15-lb. equipment and recently had a lot of success with this ball at a PBA event. It is different than the Purple Hammer, and it should be given its hardness. However, that’s pretty much where the differences end. This ball needs a lot of surface to create a similar shape as the Purple Hammer. Don’t be afraid to hit with the 360 or lower grit sanding pad to get the ball to start up earlier. Urethane does have a different shape than reactive and you want a urethane ball to start up earlier. This ball allows you to play more up the boards or straighter on the lane. It also helps you keep the ball in play. Use it on shorter-length patterns or on high-friction lane surfaces where you want the ball to slow down a bit. If you are competing in PBA competition, you will absolutely want to have this ball (or two of them) in your bag. If you love the Purple Hammer, this is a great companion to that ball!
In love with the black pearl style! The ball has a really good hook to it. Great price as well. Highly recommend!

The Black Pearl Urethane 78D is a great ball for those bowlers that like to play down and in. This ball does not over react and has a nice small arc at the break point. For those tournament bowlers that need a ball just under the Purple Urethane, this is the ball for you.
As most know, the Hammer Black Pearl 78D Urethane formally was announced recently. For the record, the Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane is still legal in all competition except PBA events. For those who do bowl in PBA events and want a compare and contrast among the Purple Pearl, the NU and the 78D, here you go. I tested all three on fresh house shot and I drilled each of these with the same layout- 40 x 3 3/4 x 10. They all have the same surafce. (I used 500 Siaair.) In terms of a compare/contrast, the Purple Pearl is clearly the earliest and strongest of the urethane options, the NU is a little longer and a touch quicker and the 78D is the weakest in terms of motion of the 3 options. My sense is that the Hammer 78D urethane serves its purpose for the slow response type of motion to control a fresh lane, especially shorter sport patterns. However, because it is the weakest of the Hammer urethane options in terms of overall hook potential, I suspect that not only will I need to be more direct in terms of angles but that I will need to switch out of the 78D in a tournament situation more quickly than I would from a Purple.
