Hammer Black Widow Toxin Pearl Review
The Hammer Black Widow Toxin Pearl pairs the Gas Mask core with pearl reactive cover for maximum length and angular backend. Watch the review.
what's up guys Bruns Nicks back and we're talking about black widows from Hammer with the 3.0 Widow coming out I wanted to do a video with the 2.0 hybrid and the original 2.0 and just throw them all against each other nothing crazy no formal specto data we're just going to talk about Hammer black widows and see how they react before we get into all that please subscribe to my channel if you haven't already now let's see Hammer black widows in action all right we're talking widows whenever a new Widow comes out the world goes goes crazy and this is no exception
the 3.0 very well received ball people had a couple questions what's the difference between this one and the original 2.0 are they replacing the 2.0 why do you put hk22 on everything we're going to talk about that a little bit so let's do it let's throw some shots and then just talk about some bowling balls here hey I mean they kind of carry everything
even on the weird off hits so the 3.0 come out as hk22 aggression solid the original which has been in my bag since it came out and I haven't really touched it as you can see it's kind of Lane shine a little bit by now but it's not a replacement for 2.0 there's quite a bit of difference between the two to Warrant having both so let's throw a shot with this one I have no idea what it's going to be doing like I said it's kind of Lane shine a little bit I brought some
pads here to kind of change it up but try to throw the same shot this should go a little bit longer I would think being a little shinier oh definitely smoother I don't have a ghost pear I never did drill the ghost or maybe I did I don't remember but it's been a little while now I don't remember having it so original 2.0 came out and that was a big question mark for
Hammer when Brunswick acquired Hammer was are they going to be able to get that ball right that was really important and the purple Hammer of course but we'll talk about youran in another 40 videos this year so the question was answered absolutely yes the 2.0 one of the most popular bowling balls in Hammer history and yeah so then came out 2.0 hybrid and I just demolished that one as well one of my favorite balls I actually ranked this ball number one of the year in
2023 little more skid flip something a little better when you need to play open angles as the lane start to dry up so people make arsenals out of black widows there's some people that get every single black widow that comes out which is usually about one per year all three of these have stayed in my bag the entire time since they come out the Black Widow just one of those bowling balls that just roll really nice for variety
of people if they were only good for say you know rev dominant players or different type of players speed dominant whatever they were only good for one one people it wouldn't work that well but black widows that gas mask core seems to work across the board doesn't matter how you drill them either you know you can use pin down layouts you can use short pin layouts you can use skid flip layouts they tend to always work and it's one of the coolest logos in Bowling let's not take that for granted marketing the way a ball looks that's a
big deal people dig that logo let's throw this 3.0 again so this is going to be the most hooking oh as we see there now how I compare the two you know I can add some surface to the 2.0 and see but I just from my own recollection that 3.0 is going to dig in a little bit stronger with that hk22 Bas you know typically in a pearl or a
hybrid you tend to get a lot more length but what I'm seeing with the 3.0 is that sweeping motion that you see on the back from most every black widow but I'm seeing a stronger more defined Motion in the front and not as much in the back as say a 2.0 so that's where the differences I think you're going to see between 3.0 and
2.0 all right let's add a little bit of surface to this 2.0 just 2,000 by hand just want to knock some of this Shine off of it this thing is certainly due for a resurface but I'm stubborn when it comes to that stuff could also use a probably a new grip in here too it's been a little
while all right I would never call Black Widow 2.0 flippy on the right amount of oil it can can be considered more skid flip but it flares so much 058 differential I get a lot of track flare it's creating a lot of friction and a lot of early flare too those flar Lings are pretty wide open I mean you can kind of see just the how it
burns in there but mainstain the bad this has been kind of a iconic ball for Hammer it's out wider hold yeah all right so I get kind of like that same spot out there where I four pin at the 3.0 hits that spot and went through the face so there is a difference in strength there I think the response on a 3.0 is a lot stronger than
the 2.0 solid and I think the overall hook potential is a little bit more as well so the original black widows came out 2006 era 2005 and you know we're almost talking two decades of dominance there so with every release has been kind of a popularity contest here who's got the next Widow what's going to be next what
do you you guys want to see next what should be the next Widow we've done the hybrid skid flip obviously the gas mask core we're not messing with that very much are we so when you perfect something like that you kind of leave it alone let's throw another shot but the longevity of the Black Widow name is just iconic and B that's got a hook get it just the hitting power offit hits
messenger City not just showing off and uh yeah I don't leave a whole lot of eight pins with this ball so that's also a bonus you know but when I go to a tournament I'm typically going to have six bowling balls with me whether it be Nationals or local tournaments whatever so in my bag one is going to be purple urethane black urethane new blue Hammer that's half my bag with urethane urethane like because that's my aame
nowadays I want to play them straighter I want to play them with urethane in my other bag there's likely going to be a black widow up top depending on whatever condition I'm bowling on a benchmark type bowling ball symetric maybe Asim kind of like an Envy tour and then something for the dry something if the lanes get dry so something Pearl something lower differential something that's going to get down the lane but black widows they always have a stay in the bag all right let's see what we can do
with this 2.0 hybrid get up yep so yeah comparing the two 3.0 versus 2.0 hybrid obviously 2.0 hybrid gets down the lane a lot easier a lot sharper on the back later break point so you're going to need a little bit more defined friction but the nice thing is you you know it comes out shiny compound finish you can dull it up you can put the same surface as say 2.0 or 3.0 500 1, 2,000
and get that ball to read on heavier oil so if you're speed dominant we talk about that a lot if you throw the ball hard you don't have a lot of revs but you want to see the ball flip don't be afraid to take a shiny ball and make it dull now you that begs a question well why do I need a 3.04 what do I need a 2.04 if I have the 2.0 hybra can I just D it is the same no good shot it's not the same at the surface level they're the
same at the chemical level not the same the construction of a solid material ball hybrid material ball paralized material ball is different they absorb different levels of oil at different rates so they're not the same the surface might be the same but they're not going to react and respond the same all right let's throw couple more shots here let's go back to the original I haven't throwing this in a while I'm just going to keep in the same Zone there but yeah now it's like this one's
a little more [Music] smooth and just a little bit easier to control as you can see like when it gets through the pins it's not really driving through as hard as say like the 2.0 hybrid because cuz it doesn't have as much back end it's smoother so 3.0 hybrid is stronger earlier creates more friction allow you to maybe play the lanes a little different than you would with the other two so I would start with like a
3.0 come on ball get out of there almost left me an eight pin not today it says in my opinion the 3.0 is better on the freshest of oil playing more straight so straighter angles and as you start to transition in you can move into other widows that are a little more flippy like 2.0 hybrid maybe even uh 2.0 so they are different in that respect and how they roll and how they get through the pins there just the overall shapes different where they're doing all the
work so if I move in with the 3.0 move five say play a little more Coast to Coast I don't get as much length trying to send it wide where if I try to throw 2.0 there it's going to be a lot more effortless so I'm going to try to throw the same shot there same tempo just to show you how much length you get from a 2.0
hybrid and why it's just a little bit easier using the right ball when you go heads up so that's basically it this was a very low-key video I just want to showcase black widows especially the top three that I really really love obviously the ghost is out there still available I didn't throw it much but these three right here 3.0 2.0 hybrid 2.0 are still in my arsenals still in my tournament
bag obviously I've drilled 100 bowling balls in the last year it feels like doing these videos but black widows great versatility cover tweaks we test them out thoroughly here we make sure that the product's going to be good and lives up to the name of Black Widow so that's all if you have any questions about black widows glad to help please put them in the comments and if this video helped you in any way please drop me a line talk to you guys soon please subscribe
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed that the Hammer Black Widow Toxin Pearl delivers noticeably stronger midlane read and earlier backend engagement compared to earlier Black Widow iterations. On fresh oil conditions, independent reviewers observed that the HK22 solid coverstock generates a more defined, aggressive motion in the front part of the lane while maintaining the characteristic sweeping backend motion associated with the Black Widow line. The Toxin Pearl exhibited measurably more hook potential than the original 2.0 solid, with a stronger response to medium-heavy oil patterns. Interestingly, the reactive pearl coverstock still retained excellent shape through the pins even on less-than-perfect strikes, suggesting the asymmetric core design provides consistent pin action across a range of hit angles.
When compared head-to-head against the 2.0 Hybrid variant, the Toxin Pearl showed less length down the lane but stronger overall hook potential, making it better suited for fresh oil patterns where earlier friction is desired. Reviewers noted that surface adjustments proved effective—light hand-sanding to 2,000 grit noticeably reduced the factory shine and allowed the ball to read the midlane earlier on heavier oil. The differential between coverstock types (solid vs. pearl vs. hybrid) became apparent: while surface can be modified, the underlying material construction absorbs oil at different rates, meaning this pearl will behave distinctly from a solid even with matching surface prep. The ball’s versatility with various drilling layouts—pin-down, short pin, and skid-flip configurations—was confirmed throughout testing, demonstrating why the Black Widow line maintains such broad appeal across different release styles.
Who Is This Ball For?
The Hammer Black Widow Toxin Pearl is an excellent choice for bowlers who regularly encounter fresh to medium-heavy oil conditions and want a ball that reads the lane earlier without sacrificing backend motion. Bowlers who prefer playing straighter angles and need strong midlane response will find this pearl coverstock particularly effective. It’s also well-suited for moderate-to-high rev players who want defined, predictable ball motion; the reactive pearl provides the length control needed without the excessive skid of some hybrid designs.
This ball also makes sense as a complement to other equipment in an established arsenal. Bowlers who already own earlier Black Widow releases will notice the Toxin Pearl fills a distinct role—stronger and more aggressive than the 2.0 but less length-dependent than the 2.0 Hybrid. At $199.95, it’s reasonably priced for a premium asymmetric reactive pearl and can serve as a reliable “fresh oil specialist” that works across multiple drilling layouts without requiring extensive surface modifications to perform.
The Pros
- • Pearl version of the Toxin line provides more length and angular backend
- • Gas Mask asymmetric core delivers heavy hitting power
- • Excellent complement to the Toxin Solid and Hybrid
The Cons
