Roto Grip Idol Review
While no longer in production, the Roto Grip Idol remains a solid option on the used market for bowlers seeking a versatile medium oil performer. The combination of the Ikon symmetric core and MicroTrax-S18 coverstock delivers predictable hook with strong backend continuation.
hey welcome back everybody today we have another episode of testing with the rotor grip optimal idle Pearl if you like what we do follow us on Facebook Instagram YouTube don't forget to subscribe and check us out on patreon First Impressions for idle fans the optimum idle Pearl will be another must in the lineup all right so let's jump in it's not a huge surprise for storm to release a shiny version of the optimal Idol with
The Pearl this notably brings microt TRX Pearl with that 100% Nano particles load microt TRX is known for giving more of a midlane read to add a control profile in the lanes and we saw what the optimum Idol that although it offers plenty of midlane control the formula seemed very capable of big backend I did refinish the reactor gloss that th000 plus step two compounds and the 3,000 Scuff the simplest way to describe the Pearl is basically a cleaner version of the solid with a shiny surface notice I didn't
mention Pearl specifically but rather the finish the ball simply pushes the mid lane read a little deeper into the lane so you get a little longer look but same shape more or less not too smooth not too angular however on Fresh I'd say the shiny finish did make this version more prone to over under as as you kind of expect it's more sensitive to speed and release changes on Fresh oil given this in between down Lane shape but still relatively strong it really doesn't fit in mid late as that's too
far down in the bag but it isn't as angular is something I'd I'd like personally slotted in the mid toine like the harsh reality Pro so it's a bit of a tweener like I am now Tyler's up next and with the optimum Idol Pearl I I'll just say there there's a significant bias up front he's had Every Idle ball and will certainly continue that the shape is recognizable to the family it's a clear step down
when he wants something cleaner than the solid version he loves the solid version he still keeps at Cosmos which is essentially like a benchmark for him now that it's calmed down quite a bit that has extreme tracks which makes it read even earlier and theoretically more even but since Tyler can generate angle with his role it's still booming and very continuous and plus it's gotten a little weaker over time as I said the optimal Idol pearls a little cleaner as you would expect again due to the shiny finish and due to the age this ball
feels a bit stronger now than his Cosmos and and he would have flexibility to adjust the Finish to suit where he wants to fit it in the bag either way the idol Pearl is a no-brainer for Tyler given that he also saw a bit of over under on the fresh scuffing the shine even more will be useful longer term now Brian's up with the optimal idle Pearl he's been on a hunt for something to replace his phase three and and this ball seemed to Wi his eyes he
really seemed to match up to the motion of of this particular Idol uh I guess with that added mid midlane traction and still good backend it was stronger than he anticipated it offered a a very nice backend move as I alluded so he had to give it more room than he was expecting he did find the slot just left of the second Arrow again he needed to make sure he gets some belly to allow some room for the shape but it gave him a reliable move that he was happy to see so the bottom line I'd say in the
end if you love the optimum idle shape and need something with the same underlying texture but a little cleaner the Pearl version is a perfect step down they both use microt trxs technology in the cover stock so they have the texture needed to give some good midlane control the main difference is the shinier finish reads later in the mid lane whereas the solid reads the middle of the mid lane for some this ball will be a no-brainer I'll Tyler for others it'll be good but you'll have to squeeze
something else out of the bag thanks for watching hopefully this helped you some and we'll see you in a future episode
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
The Roto Grip Idol showcases the effectiveness of pairing a proven symmetric core design with a polished solid reactive coverstock. The Ikon coreβs 2.49 RG and .052 differential provide a balanced reaction thatβs neither too early nor too late, making it an excellent benchmark ball for medium oil conditions. The moderate flare potential of 4-5 inches ensures good lane coverage without becoming uncontrollable for most bowlers.
The MicroTrax-S18 solid reactive coverstock, finished at 2000 grit with polish, creates an interesting dynamic where the ball can handle medium oil volumes while still providing the length and backend reaction typically associated with pearl coverstocks. This makes the Idol particularly effective on house shots where the polished surface allows it to get through the fronts cleanly before the solid coverstock engages the midlane oil. The result is a strong, continuous arc that provides excellent pin carry and versatility across different release styles and lane positions.

Roto Grip IDOL Layout: 55 x 5 x 60 Finish: 2000Ab What I saw on the lanes: I started where I have been looking and standing with my DD Trick on the THS and I found the ball was way stronger then what I thought it would be, and also stronger than the Haywire that I loved on SPL and Brunswick surfaces. The mid lane read was just like my Haywire, but the front end and back end were stronger. The overall hook was stronger than any other HP3 balls in the past. 4 boards right more and 2-3 boards left at the break point on THS on SPL and 4-6 on HPL, due to more grit of surface. Once again, Roto Grip and @Roto_Schlem have out done themselves again.
Ball Review: I absolutely love this ball. For those who miss their Haywire the IDOL will be the perfect replacement for those seeking the benchmark ball. Personally, with the original Haywire I could easily get to the pocket although I had issues with carry. With the IDOL's new surface and core there is a stronger continuation through the pins. Out of the box in league I went 769 with it and used it all 3 games. The moves weren't substantial when the lanes transitioned which was a rarity at the house I bowl league in. I moved only 3 boards the whole night (3 one and one's). I bowled on wet/dry and playing the lanes inside out I was able to get through the oil to the dry and the ball bounced back incredibly with great carry. I have a 55 x 4 x 70 pin down layout on this ball. You can see how early this balls begins to roll without over or under reacting. Video Review: https://youtu.be/23pZLoCaphY
The Idol features new everything, new core in the super aggressive symmetric Ikon core, and Micro Trax-18, their strongest Nano cover to date. This is easily the strongest ball Roto has released in the HP3 line, stronger than the Haywire even by a couple boards, and challenges the GB3 for the most hook in a symmetric ball and at that price point on the market. The result is a very smooth, even, controllable, and naturally strong ball that due to the characteristics of the Nano cover is more versatile than most balls that strong, as well as very continuous and great at blending wet/dry transition without jerking or burning energy on friction. The Idol should be a serious consideration for sport tournament bowlers and especially collegiate bowlers looking for a strong symmetric 1 ball. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_7qQzDPw4A&t=14s
I have my Idol drilled pin up and it gives me so much versatility on several conditions I play on. The shape it gives me changes depending on the part of the lane I am playing and the surface i am using. Box surface lets me get right on the fresh and have a strong controllable motion without any jerk on the back. As the lanes start carrying down, this surface does very well combatting the push. As i polished it, i could play the same part of the lane as it stored more energy to give it more jerk on the back end while keeping its hitting power. The polished surface was also a pretty good choice for after that first game transition when the carry down breaks down a little more. This will be one of my bench mark balls that I start with in league and house condition type tourneys.
ROTO GRIP IDOL Well, when I first heard of the Haywire being discontinued I was upset. It is one of my favorites. Now that I have the Idol there is absolutely no disappointment here anymore. I am very impressed with the new Idol. On a fresh 40' house shot it was easy to get the Idol through the fronts with a GREAT mid lane read and strong continuation through the pins. One of the biggest thing I have noticed with the Idol is when throwing it with more traffic, I could make smaller moves left than most normal moves with several on the pair. The more I have bowled with my Idol as it now as a littles lane shine, it just gets better and better. With the little bit of lane shine my Idol has it is so clean and strong off of the spot. I know with my Idol at box finish it'll tackle all heavier oiled oil patterns. I have a few friends with the Idol that has it shiny, and it is super clean and real angular down lane. The Idol is sure to fit in all bowlers arsenals. Great job!!
