The traditional C3 Core has been designed to work with old school urethane to provide the player with an array of options to get that needed urethane type look. This includes a 500 OOB Abralon finish which is a typical surface starting point for most urethane pieces. When the initial announcement came out from the PBA I already had my mind set that the next urethane offering would be meh compared to the current options already available. OOB I took this one to the lanes to practice and even had a few other thumbless players give the 78-U a few rolls. Right away the ball read early and provided good control. I did not see anything overly fancy but did notice after we put some miles on the ball it started lengthening a bit which is typical as the surface smooths upwards over time. In comparing the 78-U to my all-time favorite urethane piece the Fast Pitch I noticed the 78-U does not perform as well bumping in and opening angles. Both the Fast Pitch and Pitch Black tend to shape earlier and are more predictable for me. I experimented a bit and took the 78-U to a 1K Abralon finish. This experiment paid huge dividends at a Year End Event contested on a short sport pattern. At the Year End Event a neighboring pro shop employee lead qualifying with the 78-U off the press. I used my go to pieces described above. After a ton of play I was unable to bump inside and went for the change to the 78-U (1K surface). It worked great and pulled me out of a jam and into the finals. It gave me a great shape while keeping my angles closed. I believe the C3 Core really helps to balance the harder coverstock out. I think you may find a great use for this ball when planning out your tournament adventures. I highly recommend the !Q Tour 78-U. Layout: 4.5 x 45 #1 4 x 0 #2 Surface: 500 Grit Abralon The IQ Tour 78/U brings the Centripetal C3 core found in the entire IQ lineup paired with the new Control 78 Urethane Coverstock. The new 78 hardness of this IQ 78/U was to conform to the new PBA hardness rule. As a PBA member and one who avidly does the regional Tour, it was essential for me to have this ball. Since urethane seems to be so prevalent, I drilled two that will give me two different shapes on the lane. The 4.5" by 45 drilling matches what I have on a current Pitch Black and Zen U. This drilling gives me a slightly cleaner motion on the lane while giving me more overall backend motion then a stronger drilling. I use this drilling specifically on sport patterns where the volume is higher and the lane surface is older or warn. The second drilling I used a 4 x 0. This drilling is super strong flaring and puts the pin directly on my axis line. This causes really strong hook in the front part of the lane and a more controlled backend. I can use this one being more left to right or if the lane pattern is high volume with a harder lane surface environment. Comparing the two together on my Typical House pattern which is 44ft and medium volume, the 4.5 x 45 ball allowed me to play the lanes more in front of me keeping my angles closed in the track area. More ideal for the fresh to control the backend and blend the lanes better. The 4 x 0 ball gave me about 5 more boards of overall total hook. It forced me to be further left than the first one because of the strong hook in the front of the lane. I could use this one either on the fresh or for transition if urethane is really necessary. Comparing the 4.5 x 45 IQ 78/U to the Pitch Black, I was able to stand in the same spot but the IQ 78/U was more controlled in the backend. When I missed outside of my target, the ball struggled to make its way back to the pocket correctly. The Pitch Black was able to carry the pins better due to its weaker core and coverstock combination. If I didn't do the PBA events, I would strictly stick to the Pitch Black for my personal game. Comparing to the Zen U, the Zen U hooked 2 more boards overall and gave me a slightly stronger backend comparable to the Pitch Black. For Non-PBA events where urethane is necessary, I would stick to the Zen U and Pitch Black. However, the 4 x 0 IQ 78/U gave me a very unique motion that was also quite strong and accented the ball well. Due to the IQ 78/U extra hardness, the ball shines up faster so keeping up with the cover surface would be more critical for success. Adam Chase Storm Staff

It features the now legendary C3 core featured in the previous IQ Tour releases wrapped in a new 78 hardness Urethane Cover called Controll 78. With the smaller footprint of the harder cover, the core had to make up the difference and this core was a great choice. I tested the 78/U on our house pattern. My first impression was that it was much stronger than I was expecting with the hardness change. In practice it wasn't the best match-up as I didn't have access to a fresh lane. The 78/U was too aggressive on the early friction to stand right and like most urethane it didn't save energy for the back of the lane, making it impractical to throw it left to right. I got a better read on the ball my first opportunity to throw it in league. With fresh oil in the heads, it definitely let me right back into the area of the lane I wanted to play with it. My impressions of the difference between it and the pitch black were that the harder cover but stronger core makes it close under that conditons that you would want to throw urethane in anyway. When fighting early friction it felt earlier than my pitch black, which resulted in less down-lane motion. I also definitely felt that I could get away with shaping the pitch black more than the 78/U. I don't really have a rev-rate that demands much use of urethane, but my lower ball speed does make it useful in the right conditions. My home center also has more friction in the front of the lane than many places so it's definitely not where I would normall choose to throw urethane. I look forward to using this ball on patterns and in tournaments where the lane conditions suit it better. To all you Urethane bowling ball lovers out there...What more can I say about the new Storm !Q Tour 78-U. That controlled urethane reaction you expect...It is right here with this new ball. Very smooth predictable reaction overall. It still gives you that typical urethane shape even with the hardness being higher and still featuring the the C3 Core, If you are in the market for an new urethane ball, look no farther than the iQ Tour 78U. Mine is drilled pretty aggressive, I love the flare this ball gets and its fun to throw when you need it, or just to have some fun!

I drilled up my STORM IQ TOUR 78u with a layout of 4 x 4 x 0. This puts the pin on my VAL with the CG towards the axis. Warning, I am a stroker with about 16.5 MPH speed and around a 275 RPM rev rate. Urethane is usually off limits to me but I do bowl some PBA50 and if a short pattern comes up, this is the best way to keep the ball on line with my slower speed. I put this one up with my other urethane, then ZEN/U. The ZEN/U is a urethane that I can actually get enough movement from to line up and play almost dead straight on short patterns with. The IQ TOUR 78/u is surprisingly good for me, but it does lane shine rather quickly compared to the ZEN/U. The motion is very rounded and kind of roll than lay. Still, this should be in play until the lanes transition on short for me to get to lower end pieces like the BURNER SOLID or HUSTLE RIP with surface. Put this one in your bag if your looking to give the new 78 hardness urethane a try. It will be smoother than a PITCH BLACK or ZEN/U but still worth having this look in the bag.

IQ tour 78U RG is 2.49, which creates an early hook in the beginning of the lane. The differential of 0.029 creates a smooth consistent backend motion reminiscent of traditional urethane. I tested this ball on a 43 feet typical house pattern. I was able to play up the lane from seven board out with great success. For me the Zen U was stronger overall than the IQ 78U. I found the IQ Tour 78/U to be smoother than the Pitch Black and is great when control is needed and angles need to be in front of you. This ball will be excellent on short to medium sport patterns.

Layout: 4 x 3 x 2 VLS Everyone please repeat after me - Urethane is NOT for dry lanes it’s for control. Short oil, yes… dry lanes, no. Another thing to clarify, as of right now, the only need for 78 Hardness urethane is for PBA events (including regional, PBA50, PBA50 Regional, and PBA Jr. events). This does NOT change the minimum hardness for USBC leagues or tournaments. I hear a lot of misinformation out there about this. For now, you can keep using your Pitch Blacks and other urethane balls in league. As a lower rev rate player, I don’t use urethane a lot, typically only used for very short oil patterns and shots that require controlling the back end motion - Urethane excels at that. I was curious what the additional hardness would do to the Urethane cover, especially paired with the iconic C3 core. The low RG of the C3 core and Urethane are a match made in heaven, the ball rolls early and is stable and consistent off the back end. The core does flare, which minimizes the amount of oil that the ball can deposit on the back end, so it doesn’t seem to cause carry down issues like traditional low-flaring urethane balls do. While it may not be required unless you’re bowling PBA events, I think the iQ 78/U deserves consideration with the Pitch Black if you’re in the market for a urethane ball. Out of Box ball motion was smooth through the fronts with a smooth backend shape. I compared this to the Storm Pitch Black. The 78/U was a few boards right of the Pitch Black. The Pitch Black was a few boards left and started early in the mids with a urethane motion on the backend. This piece will be good for bowlers with high rev rate. The !Q78-U is Storms replacement urethane piece in compliance with the new 78 hardness rule on the PBA tour. The !Q78 features the same C3 core found in all the !Q tour balls but is wrapped in control 78 urethane. This combination creates a ball that’s a little earlier, rounder and more forward than the Pitch Black. I drilled mine stronger so I can see more separation between the two. IQ Tour 78U Cover: Control 78 Urethane Core: C3 RG: 2.49 RG Diff: 0.029 My layout: 3.5 x 1.5 The 78U is a solid urethane symmetrical ball that was created to comply with the new PBA tour hardness guidelines. I see the 78U working best on short oil patterns or medium patterns with light oil volume. The new harder Control 78U cover is less responsive which gets the ball started a little later than a Pitch Black. That really does help to stay in the friction without getting off line too quickly. The C3 core from the IQ line helps compensate for the slightly weaker cover very well. The faster revving core, compared to most symmetrical urethane balls, helps create a similar but upgraded shape of traditional urethane balls of the past. I have found that the 78U is best on the fresh when I can either use the friction on a short or medium pattern, or if there is a little bit of hold on flatter patterns as to keep the ball more in front of me. With the PBA rules with the hardness change from the USBC. The bowling manufacturers needed make a new urethane bowling ball. Storm came out with the new Storm IQ/78 U. I drilled mine with a 4 inch pin up. With the proven C³ Centripetal Control core and the new Controll 78 Solid Urethane the IQ/78 U is truly straight urethane. I tried the 78U on the shorter sport patterns, 37,38,39 feet. Urethane normally doesn't roll good for me and my roll. But the 78/U pleasantly rolled pretty good. With the core I got decent flare out of the 78/U and the typical smooth transition down lane. I was able to stay on top of the friction longer than a Pitch Black or Zen U. Where those 2 balls normally force me left sooner than the 78/U. It seems that the PBA guys like the new 78/U very well as on their shorter patterns. Bunch of good feedback from the guys. So if your looking for a new urethane for shorter higher friction patterns this is your ball! The new urethane IQ Tour 78U features the new Controll 78 solid urethane cover wrapped around the C3 core found in all of the previous IQ releases. This ball is finished at 500 grit abralon. I drilled mine just like I drill most of my reactive balls…5x4x2. For a urethane ball, the IQ Tour 78 U has a good amount of track flare, however it still maintains a traditional urethane ball reaction. When compared to the Pitch Black, the new IQ starts up just as early but has a more rounded backend motion than the Pitch Black. Overall hook is about the same, just a different type of motion. The C3 core helps with the carry on the off pocket hits. When ordinary urethane would leave a flat corner pin, this has enough energy to kick those pesky corners out more often than not. This ball will be great for the short patterns or for bowlers who like to play straight up the outside part of the lane during league competition.

The Storm !Q Tour 78-U is a new urethane bowling ball that is compliant with the new PBA hardness rules. This bowling ball features a very well known C3 Core and the new Controll 78 Urethane Coverstock. The combination of the two seems to create the true urethane-like reaction. After seeing other bowlers use the !Q Tour 78-U, I decided to drill mine with a stronger pin-down layout: 45 x 4 ¼ x 75. I didn’t want this bowling to flare a lot as I never had much success with urethane-like bowling balls that flared a lot. One thing I am certain off, this bowling ball will need a good amount of surface on it as this new urethane coverstock is less aggressive. In my opinion, the !Q Tour 78-U works best on shorter to shorter-medium patterns. The ball has worked well for me on fresh patterns when I needed to keep my launch angles very straight and when the backend reaction was very strong. I did notice that once the patterns broke down a little bit, and greater launch angles were required, this bowling ball becomes a little to weak for my liking. This ball becomes quite sensitive when there is a little bit of a hookspot as the core and the surface of this bowling ball wants to read early, but the coverstock isn’t strong enough after you make a move and increase your launch angle. If you plan on bowling PBA events, this ball is a must have. However, make sure you understand the motion of this ball and find the best window of use for it.

This Urethane is Built Different! Obviously PBA rules have changed a bit with having a new Hardness Minimum. The 78U is the new answer for those guys. Obviously when you make a urethane cover harder, it’s going to be a bit cleaner through the fronts. When compared to the Pitch Black, the 78U is much cleaner. This can be a good thing, This allows you to slow it down and stay closer to the friction longer. Typically when Urethane gets bad is when you have to start migrating in. The Pitch Black is much earlier, forcing you in quicker…. If you have seen any of our pro’s on tour you may have seen them using more surface than normal. I have even seen guys using 180 grit. The volumes used on tour keep increasing, demanding more surface. This isn’t necessarily the same for house or even modified patterns at your local center. 500 grit may be enough. But as always, adjust the surface to suit your needs! The new IQ Tour 78/U is the newest Urethane option that abides by the new PBA rules. It uses the C3 Core which has been made famous with the IQ series wrapped with the new 78 control urethane cover. This ball has already been proven it’s a force to be reckoned with out on tour. I was very impressed when I threw the 78/U. Even with the harder cover it digs earlier than the pitch black which gives it just slightly more overall hook. I’ve gotten very comfortable with the Pitch Black and one issue I’ve always dealt with is it can be too long which is corner pin central. The new 78/U gives me a harder read in the mids which actually kicks the corners out much better. One issue I’ve seen though is it doesn’t like steep angles. The Pitch Black was not a good choice for me because of how slow it is for my rev rate. The Pitch Black looks good early but when the lanes transition I leave a lot of flat tens. I was not sure how to drill these two urethane pieces until I watched Darren Tang’s review of the 78/U and he suggested a higher pin buffer for my rev rate category. When comparing the !Q Tour to the Pitch Black I drilled them almost the same with the Pitch Black having a layout of 4 x 4 x 1 VLS. The Pitch Black is still earlier and slower down lane compared to the 78/U but I was excited to see the 78/U has more continuation down lane than the Pitch Black. This allows me to trust that the ball will react to the friction and have a continuous motion at the end of the pattern to the pocket rather than rolling out and leaving flat tens. My video ball review is on the house shot but with PBA 50 events starting up for the 2024 season the 78/U will be in the arsenal to have as an option on the shorter patterns. 2 hander, 450 rpm, 15-16mph, bowling on THS and PBA regionals, 225 average, 40x4x40 layout This feels like a more 'traditional' urethane that was used a few decades ago as compared to the revered Pitch Black and Purple Hammer. However, this is part of the reason I actually liked it a lot more because it allowed me to keep it in front of me and I cant create a ton of miss room left or right. This is also not a ball that will shape a ton like the PB or Purple. It is easily 3-5 boards less than either one, and it hooks earlier and is way smoother. There is very little backend so I can see the ball hook in the midlane and just walk into the pocket. because of this, it is incredibly smooth and controllable and if I split or leave a washout, its because I missed the friction spot or its the wrong ball to be throwing. With the PB or purple, you could keep moving in and continue shaping the ball, but the IQ 78 tells you when its great and it'll tell you when you should probably switch to reactive. This makes the bowlers better instead of relying on a specific ball to bail them out in a sense. It just goes so forward and you need to keep it in front of you. However, if you don't plan on bowling PBA tournaments, you probably don't really have a reason to buy this ball. I don't think urethane works very well for majority of people on typical house shots, so unless you're one of those special cases, you wont really need this ball. This ball will be absolutely amazing for anyone throwing on sport shots though, it'll keep you out of trouble and make you a better bowler because of its early and rolly nature. I am a higher speed, rev challenged 220-250ish, high tilt, high rotation, and super low track player. I drilled my Storm !Q Tour 78 U 4 x 4 x 2 using Storm VLS and my axis point is 3 ¼ right and 7/8 up. The Storm !Q Tour 78 U is a symmetric solid urethane piece that I really like medium volume and short patterns. The low RG, small diff, and medium flare potential is ideal when I need a smooth and predictable shape downlane.

Patterns used for review: Pattern A: 35Ft, 28Mls, 3:1 ratio Pattern B: 41Ft, 25Mls, 3:1 ratio Pattern C: 45 Ft 29Mls 2.5:1 COMMENTS LAYOUT: 4X4X2 , I use multiple hand positions and speed changes which changes rev rate, read and speed of ball. PLAY The Storm IQ Tour 78/U is all that, a Urethane Ball you need for any moment. Don’t think this is a ball you won’t use very often. It is a ball you can use whenever you need to. Controllable, big hitting power, mid and down lane read/hook and easy to move around on different patterns and lines of play. The best part? IT’S URETHANE and you NEED ONE! Pattern A: Ball 1. Out of box the Storm IQ Tour 78/U played as expected closer to the gutter. The hardness allowed for an easier twig line style of play. The short sport pattern kept play right and straight, slowly opened up after 2 games and played moved to a 10 -2 line of play through 6 games. Out of box surface held the roll, hitting power and lane play as oil worked into the surface. Pattern B: Ball 2: Out of box cover was restored for the Storm IQ Tour 78/U. This pattern was a little trickly initially the Storm IQ Tour 78/U had a little too quick read in the front part of lane to stay right. The move was bugger to the left. The best place to score consistently was 22-15 down lane. Lane play was trickly as bowlers were playing multiple areas of the lane. Storm IQ Tour 78/U could hold the line but carry was a problem. Surface, in my thoughts, need to be a little smoother (1000/3000 grit) for the scorability factor. Another layout would have been ideal for this one. Pattern C: Ball 3: Out of box cover was taken down to 500. This pattern being a longer pattern/with volume was most ideal from the right to create the hold down lane for the moves left. The other bowlers also used urethane at 500 Grit. The Storm IQ Tour 78/U shined on this pattern and really worked the front to back of the pattern. Bowled 4 games with great success from this angle. Decided to 500 Grit again to simulate a second Storm IQ Tour 78/U. Let me tell you it just gave more room and more power without big moves. Last 3 games and still most move was 5 boards left of original. Real keys here are how it read and controlled the pattern and as the pattern developed for ball changes and moves left, it allowed for me to stay right longer against the other bowlers while still scoring. LOW DOWN: The Storm IQ Tour 78/U needs to be in your BAG. PERIOD! Urethane that works for all styles. Next us league night!

Orientation: Right Handed Rev Rate: 400 RPM Speed: 16-17 MPH PAP: 4 ½ over and ½ up Location: Enterprise Park Lanes, Springfield MO Pattern: High Volume THS VLS Layout: Layout 1: 4 x 4 x 2 Urethane layout pin over ring I see what they did here. The Pitch Black has a stronger cover and weaker core and the IQ Tour 78/U has a weaker (harder) cover and a stronger core. The result is a VERY close imitation of Pitch Black. It’s not exactly the same as you would expect, I feel like the IQ 78 gets a touch more forward due to the core rev’ing up quicker. I drilled them both the same and the IQ 78 backs off more. SO the over result is so close. I think this is a slam dunk replacement for the Pitch Black on tour. Off tour, I’m still throwing my Pitch Black, except if I need a slightly different shape.

When I got my ball, out of the box, it was too aggressive for typical house shot. So, I had it lightly polished. Did I do a bad thing? It calmed the back end reaction, but I'm not sure if that reduced the hitting power. Any ideas?

My son needed a short pattern ball. This fit perfectly. Allows him to bowl both pba jr events as well as usbc. Without having to have multiple balls. Allows for one more option during tournaments. Having a 16 lb Columbia 300 Orange Dot for 40 years it was time to upgrade. It was recommended that I purchase a 15 lb U/78. It was the best thing I ever did. My score improved by 30 pins, now averaging 213 at 67 years old. The most consistent reaction ball around on any condition for me. I’ve also shot 10 games over 250 with my highest game 289.

Two handed league bowler 18 mph 450 rpm 4x4x5 I love it. I thought I would be able to keep in front of me better than I have, but I don't have quite 20 games with it. This ball just finds the pocket no matter the conditions.
