Performance Analysis

Performance Analysis

The Storm The Road features the proven Inverted Fe2 A.I. symmetric core paired with the versatile ReX Hybrid Reactive coverstock, creating a balanced combination that performs well across medium to heavy oil conditions. With an RG of 2.55 and differential of .045, this ball provides moderate flare potential and predictable motion that won’t overwhelm developing bowlers while still offering enough performance for experienced players on typical house patterns. The hybrid coverstock’s Storm Reacta Gloss finish allows the ball to get through the front part of the lane cleanly while providing a controlled backend reaction.

Positioned in Storm’s Thunder Line as a mid-performance option, The Road strikes an excellent balance between performance and affordability. The symmetric core design makes it particularly forgiving for bowlers still working on their release consistency, while the hybrid coverstock provides enough traction in oil to be effective without being overly aggressive. While it may not have the hook potential needed for sport patterns or flood conditions, it excels in typical league environments where versatility and predictability are more valuable than raw hooking power.

Bowlers Say

Bowlers say The Road is an excellent upgrade to the original Hy-Road, featuring stronger REX Hybrid coverstock and AI core technology. It reads the midlane earlier than the original while maintaining clean length through the fronts with strong backend continuation. Most praise its versatility for medium to dry conditions and as a transition ball, though some find it sensitive to oil/friction requiring precise timing and angles.

Layout: 4 1/2 x 3 x 2 Surface: Reacta Gloss The new Road brings back the Inverted FE Core found in the original Hyroad series and amped it up utilizing the AI Core Technology which reduced the RG to 2.55 and put the differential to .045 which is actually .01 below the Hyroad. There is also a new coverstock on this one which is the REX Hybrid which is considerably stronger than the previous R2S Hybrid coverstock. The difference in core and cover technology makes the road a little earlier on the lane and has more flare potential due to the stronger coverstock. I was able to test this on my typical 44ft house pattern and a 42ft 30ml sport pattern. Here is what I found: I was pleasantly surprised to see how much the Road actually read the midlane in comparison to the original Hyroad. Normally, I would only be able to use a Hyroad on broken down conditions if I was even able to get to use a ball with that high of an RG level. The Road got down the lane very easily with its polished finish as expected but it read the body of the pattern considerably sooner creating a nice shape in the back part of the lane. I was able to use the ball on the fresh even with my higher speed style which is a rarity for me. My only caveat is that due to its higher RG rating, it still had a very sensitive reaction to the friction and oil where if I got the ball to the dry quicker or in the oil more than usual, it would over hook or under hook. I had to be very careful to still roll the ball pretty forward to get the reaction I was looking for. This for me even though it worked pretty well on the fresh, would be a more transition ball for me due to my style. I think also for most people, it would be harder to use on the fresh just because of its cleaner and more responsive reaction. If you bowl on a drier house pattern, I think this has great potential for the fresh. If you bowl on a house condition similar to mine, it would be better as a transition ball than a fresh ball. However, removing the polish and adding more surface to the coverstock can get the ball to read the lane sooner and make it more predictable. On the 42ft 30ml Sport Pattern, I saw a lot of the same characteristics. However, this time I did alter the surface to a 1000 grit abralon finish because of the higher oil volume. I found the same sensitive ball reaction as on the house pattern. Usually on patterns, we need to control the lanes more with lower RG bowling balls and with the Road being a higher RG, it was certainly harder to control on the fresh. At the 1000 finish, it was still clean through the front but read the body of the pattern much stronger and giving me a really good left to right look. Straighter angles gave me trouble keeping the ball on line. Once I moved into about 25 with my feet and got the ball out to about 8 at the breakpoint, I had a pretty solid ball reaction and didn't find any issues with the ball going through the pins properly. For higher oil volume patterns, I definitely recommend taking the surface down so it is earlier and smoother overall. It can be a really good transition ball for medium oil conditions and medium length house patterns at its box surface. Adam Chase Storm Staff

Storm The Road Layout: 4.5 x 4 x 2 Storm Pin Buffer Layout Rev Rate: 325 rpm, 7 degree of axis tilt, 40 degree of axis rotation Testing information: 41 foot THS (medium to light volume) Bowling Center: Fulton Bowling Center Kegel Machine – Brunswick Anvilane Storm’s The Road utilizes the REX Hybrid coverstock and the Inverted Fe2 weight block. The weight block is surrounded by A.I. Core Technology. The Road is the next ball in the HyRoad line. The HyRoad was one of my all-time favorites. The Road can be thought of as an amped up HyRoad. The REX cover is stronger than R2S cover used in the HyRoad, which helps control that mid-lane reaction. I think The Road is going be useable on more conditions than the HyRoad. I have been using The Road as a step down from the DNA Coil type balls during league the last two weeks. My first two league games with it have been over 250. You may have to be careful picking up your ball off the ball rack because The Road is very similar in appearance to the DNA Coil and Phase II. At least that is a concern for us senior bowlers. Lol. Technology has been introduced in some great new balls and added to some of the most popular existing SPI technology. It's only natural that the Fe2 core featured in the Hy-Road and other balls of it's line would be next to get the AI upgrade. Enter The Road. To compliment the upgraded core, it was paired with a Hybrid version of the REX cover featured on the Night Road. I tested The Road on a fresh house pattern at my home center. Our fresh pattern is long and higher volume so the cleaner balls aren't usually what I prefer to start with. The high ratio can exacerbate the over/under so the really responsive balls can leave you some interest patterns on small misses. I was a bit surprised how well The Road worked on the fresh. I had to keep the angle open but it wasn't as fickle front to back as I expected and saw the right part of the lane very consistently. I next tested The Road game three in league. The lanes transition a lot and the worn front panels can make moving inside a bit tricky, especially with my ball speed. I was moving off of an Optimum Idol that I had taken the surface up to 3000 on. My hope was that I could transition into The Road on the same line that I had been striking on , once the smoother OI was having trouble getting the corners out. I was really surprised at the difference between how the ball looked down-lane on the broken down lane compared to the fresh one. The Road really saw the mid-lane harder than I expected. It got forward pretty quick so it did hit the pocket from the same alignment but I found my better carry came from getting a touch deeper, and letting my hand come around it. This is a move I have to make a lot lately with how much earlier the balls have gotten, but I had hoped the Road would be a bit closer to a Hy-Road motion. I would say that it's closer to the Night Road for me but a bit stronger. I think the The Road will be a great ball in transition for lower ball speed players, and great on the burn for high speed players. It definitely is responsive enough to come off the dry for guys with firmer ball speed so anywhere you need the ball to make a move in a smaller window, this ball with do it for you. The Road from Storm is the latest installment in the Thunder series line and is a slight remake of the legendary Hy Road. The Road features the Inverted FE2 core with AI tech and a hybrid version of REX. I drilled mine 5 x 5 x 3 and before I drilled this ball I was unsure about it because stronger cover Hy Road balls typically don’t really match up well for me but REX has been a great cover for me and after throwing this ball for awhile I am quite happy with it. It makes the same strong backend motion a Hy Road does but I would say the Road is a foot sooner and a few boards stronger overall. I can foresee this ball being a huge factor once the lanes transition and you need something cleaner through the fronts. I would say it is the strength of it is similar to a Zen Gold Label but the Road is WAY more backend. If you loved the original Hy Road and just want something a little stronger than I strongly suggest to get The Road!

Storm The Road Coverstock: ReX Hybrid Reactive Finish: Reacta Gloss Core: Inverted Fe² Technology (14 pd) RG: 2.55 Differential: 0.045 Layout: 5 x 4 x 3 1/2 - 2LS Layout Extras: 31/32 to 2" and 7/8 to 3" Finger Depth, "X" - 4 1/2 D and 1 Inch Left Tester: PAP 6 1/2 R, 1 1/4 D Review: The Road features the newer Amplfied Inertia core technology. This core as you would expect will help The Road in providing a predictable shape at the end of the pattern. As A.I. core technology has been previously tested that means a few extra percentage points of carry can be anticipated. For my review I compared The Road to the Night Road. I must note here I did not have a Hy-Road to compare The Road to which would likely be a closer comparison oob. For me, The Road has a bigger window of use than the Night Road. The Road is most impressive downlane. Initially I thought the Reacta Gloss finish would work well by scuffing it up a bit. However, I am pleasantly surprised how the oob finish looked and will test even further before changing the surface. The Night Road, as you may recall, had a 4K Fast finish. I liked 4K Fast even more once I let my Night Road lane shine a bit. Either of these balls would fit well for your medium type THS patterns. I recommend if you have/had a Night Road you'll be fine re-freshening your arsenal with The Road. If you have slower ball speed consider The Road in your arsenal. At times players with slower ball speeds struggle with big asyms or syms in the bag and at times these type of balls can get forward for the bowler. The Road upgrade with A.I. definitely matches the cover/core much better for these type of players. SPI has really upgraded the middle of the arsenal with The Road. I recommend the Road for the player looking for an edge on league transition and desiring a ball to continue with the transition as it occurs. I'm definitely excited about this ball from Storm.
