The Black Gold runs the same formula that made the Black Widow line famous: the Gas Mask asymmetric core under an aggressive cover. The numbers here are serious. A .058 differential is heavy-flare territory, the kind of board coverage that keeps a fresh track surface in the oil on every revolution, and the .016 intermediate differential gives the ball a true asymmetric breakpoint, defined and deliberate rather than a soft arc. The 2.50 RG splits the difference between early-revving control cores and energy-storing pearls, which is why the ratings land at a 6 for length and an 8 for hook: this ball starts reading the midlane on time and never stops turning.

The Aggression Hybrid cover is the piece that keeps all that core strength usable. Hybrid chemistry blends a solid’s midlane traction with a pearl’s response off friction, and the 1000 grit polish finish leans the ball toward length out of the box, so the Black Gold clears the heads better than its differential would suggest before the Gas Mask core takes over. The 8 for pin action is the payoff, the signature Widow trait: heavy flare plus a defined asymmetric move equals real hitting power at the pocket, and the 7 versatility rating reflects a cover that can be tuned up or down with surface more readily than a pure solid or pure pearl.

The fine print is in the cons. This is a medium-heavy oil ball by design, and on lighter patterns the core is simply too much engine, reading early and burning energy before the pocket.

Who Is This Ball For?

The Black Gold suits bowlers who face genuine volume and want a strong asymmetric with some polish-aided length built in: tournament players on heavier fresh patterns, league bowlers whose house puts out a flooded shot, and high-rev players who want aggression they can still control. If you have hand, the .058 differential rewards it with flare and carry; if you are more speed dominant, the hybrid cover and 2.50 RG still give the ball time to set up rather than skating through the breakpoint.

Pass on it if your lanes run medium or drier, where this much core will use itself up early, or if you prefer one benchmark ball that plays everywhere; this is a condition-specific weapon, not an all-rounder. The Black Gold is no longer in production, so it is a used-market find at this point, but the Gas Mask and Aggression Hybrid pairing has aged well, and for heavier oil it remains one of the more dependable secondhand pickups in the Widow family.
