Ebonite GB5 Hybrid Review
The Ebonite GB5 Hybrid provides smooth length and controlled backend on medium to heavy oil, a reliable benchmark for league bowlers. Watch the review.
Hi, Evanite [music] fans. I am Tommy Jones and we are here to talk about the new Gamebreaker 5 hybrid. As many of you know, the Gamebreaker has been a staple in the Evanite line for many, many years. Uh it's your benchmark bar that uh you're just always going to have one in your bag.
I can tell you from personal experience, I've probably had a gamebreaker of some form in [music] my bag for over 25 years now. From the, you know, when [music] we had the V2s and they went to the Game Breakers and Gamebreaker 2Os. Now we're all the way up to GB5s and we have the GB5 hybrid.
as you can see, it just gives you a really consistent ball roll. Um, it's always GB5s are typically one of the first balls out of my bag. They let me know if I need to go up and up in cover or down in cover. Uh, typically low RG, the Gamebreaker Core is low RG. It's 248. Um, those numbers really haven't changed in a long, long time. So, we're up in the fourth frame here.
Really just round motion, continuous down lane. Uh, it's got some shelf appeal. Sky blue and black. kind of looks a little a little gray, silverish to me. We'll uh we'll definitely do some cover work on them. You know, the cover will let you take it up a little bit if you want to get it down the lane or even more service if you want to use it on like a short pattern.
Got that one too much to the right. Cut a little too much of the friction. And it does have a strong cover on it, strong core, and it does, you know, make it goes high a little bit. So, I'll make a little move on the next frame and uh move on. The cover [music] is finished with 500 2,000 C air. What that means is it's 500 on the bottom and then C uh 2,000 on the top. gives it that nice smooth finish.
All right, up in the six frame. Uh, this ball is going to be used for your medium to heavier all conditions. Like I said, great benchmark ball in 15 lbs. We talked about a little bit earlier, the the uh the RG is 248. The differential is 045. [music] Just a good allaround bowling ball. Symmetric core that you've all known and
love for so many [music] years. Little bit little move there. Move like two and one. Get away from that friction a little bit. get a little bit farther inside the lane to uh let the ball get through the oil and store some more energy and continue to hook down lane. This is the hybrid [music] version of the GB5. We did have the GB5 Solid and the GB5 Pearl. Both were great balls and complement
each other well. And now we just put a different one right in the middle of them. Got a little bit of a lucky one there. Good shelf appeal in this ball. looking at it kind of it just kind of stands out
the way that the uh blue pops through with the black. Just a nice uh nice color combination that Evanite made here. All right, we're going to move a little bit more to get in the oil here. ball just keeps coming. So, it's going to be a ball that when you use, you're
going to have to make some keep migrating left to get to a fresher part of the front front of the lane with the uh the strong cover. So, we'll shoot our spare here. Move another couple boards on the next shot. All right, up in the ninth frame. 245 left. We missed a move in the fifth.
Didn't quite move enough in the eighth. So, we'll just move a little right. Try to go the other way. Throw it through that spot that's kind of breaking down a little bit, but uh show you that it'll still pick up with a little bit of speed.
Some patterns and some house shots that you bowl on will be a little bit different [music] as far as the amount of volume they use. you know, we're trying to go left early and then you kind of get to a point [music] to where you realize that might have been the wrong way. So, we'll move back a little bit right and firm it up. Something that a lot of house shots you'll go the other way. Uh, this house shot here at Northway [music] tends to
like it a little bit firmer and straighter. So, we tried to go left. We couldn't get ahead of it. So, we'll move back right. Get right up against the old line. Firm it up [music] and roll it. This ball let you do all these kinds of things. Much better. Much rounder shape. While
it needs a little bit of oil in the front part of the lane to kind of help it get through there so that it's not trying to trying to fight itself. It is a strong cover. You will be able to use this ball on medium to heavier oil conditions. All right, we're going to have a little fun here just to show you this bowling ball. We're going to move like I don't know seven or eight left. Throw it slower. Give it a little bit of rotation and see if we can get it all the way around the corner here.
So there you go. We had five frames [music] kind of with a normal move and then we moved a little bit right and then we moved left to kind of just show you the thing. Uh first 10 video 245. Not terrible, [music] but uh definitely missed the move early and then had to decide which ways [music] we were going to go again. Gamebreaker 5 hybrid sky blue black um benchmark [music] ball. You guys are going to be able to use a lot of different conditions. You can shine it up. You can put some more surface on and everything. [music] The release date is
uh March 19th. So, make sure to follow us on all of our [music] social media pages and remember it's a bolt to win.
Performance Analysis
Performance Analysis
Testing revealed the Ebonite GB5 Hybrid delivers a noticeably smoother, cleaner ball motion compared to higher-differential counterparts, with less aggressive backend reaction down the lane. On a 40-43 foot sport shot pattern (Krypton oil), independent reviewers observed that the ball exhibits moderate hook potential with good controllability, offering what was described as a “blendier” motion—meaning it reads the lane more gradually rather than making abrupt directional changes. The reactive hybrid coverstock came out of the box with a dull finish, which likely contributed to its measured lane behavior. Testers noted the ball works particularly well on medium-to-heavy oil conditions and can be thrown from multiple angles on the lane, providing flexibility in shot selection without requiring extreme adjustments.
On house conditions, the GB5 Hybrid showed more aggressive behavior, hooking quite a bit and requiring testers to adjust their positioning significantly to the left to maintain proper angle and distance. This shift in reaction between sport and house patterns is typical of medium-heavy equipment but worth noting if you bowl on varying house oil patterns. Comparatively, the ball tracked cleaner and retained more energy through the front of the lane than higher-differential balls tested alongside it, making it a practical complement to more aggressive equipment in a two-ball arsenal. Surface adjustments and hand position changes were necessary in certain lane conditions, indicating that bowlers will need to experiment with release and approach to dial in optimal performance.
Who Is This Ball For?
The GB5 Hybrid is best suited for bowlers who need a reliable, versatile workhorse ball for medium-heavy to heavy oil conditions without excessive hook. If you’re building a two-ball set and already own a more aggressive piece, this ball fills the role of a controlled, energy-retaining option that won’t overreact on the backend. It’s ideal for league bowlers who encounter consistent house patterns with decent oil carrydown, where a ball that reads the lane smoothly without demanding perfect execution offers real practical value.
This ball is less ideal for bowlers who prefer maximum hook potential or those primarily bowling on heavily oiled sport patterns where more aggressive differential is advantageous. If you’re still developing your technique or prefer simpler equipment choices, you may find the need for multiple shot angles and adjustments makes this better suited to intermediate-to-advanced bowlers who understand lane reading and have refined their release. At $144.95, it represents solid value for competitive league play and recreational bowling where versatility across varying conditions matters more than peak performance in any single situation.
The Pros
- • Versatile hybrid coverstock handles medium to heavy oil with ease
- • Trusted Enhanced V2 symmetric core delivers smooth, predictable motion
- • Excellent value at under $150 for a mid-performance hybrid
The Cons
- • May not have enough backend for bowlers who prefer angular reactions
- • Not ideal for heavy oil compared to asymmetric options
